Bullshit. These are near record LOWS! "Numbers: 17 deaths in ICE custody so far in 2026 (calendar year). For comparison, historical data shows dozens of deaths in some prior years under both parties (e.g., reports of ~56 under Obama, lower under Trump, and varying under Biden). Death rates are often cited as very low relative to the population in custody (e.g., under 0.01% in some analyses).

17 people have died in ICE custody in 2026 alone. Last night, Republicans blocked our amendment to require DHS to let health experts into detention facilities and make sure people detained get the critical health care they need. We cannot accept their cruelty.

Last night, as Republicans started the partisan process to force through funding for unaccountable immigration enforcement agencies, @SenWarren and I tried to push through a measure to create an independent watchdog to rein in ICE’s violence. ICE has been terrorizing our communities and making Americans less safe. That has to stop.

In the dead of night, Republicans pushed through $140 billion more for ICE while rejecting every single Democratic amendment to lower costs, end the Iran war, and fix our healthcare system. They will be held accountable in November.
