Having visited and lived in the Soviet Union for a few years in the early 1980s, I can say that the Soviet Union was a shit hole compared to Europe back then and now. It had some good bits but overall it was a bad place to live. I have not visited modern Russia but from speaking to Russians, modern Russia is a lot better than the dark days of communism. Getting back to the point though, 1980s Europe was better than modern Europe, but the EU is better than the Soviet Union even though the EU is getting worse year over year.
