Some people saw that as savage confidence; like she clocked a scarcity mindset early and opted out. Others think it was overkill… judging someone off a $3 cheese decision might be a stretch, especially in a city where everything feels overpriced.

I’m about to get married, and my fiancé knows I have an inheritance that was left to me by my grandparents. It’s in my name only, and I’ve been saving it for years. Today lower interest rates have prevented the monthly burden from being even worse, but they haven’t overcome the explosion in home prices. For most typical buyers, it is indeed harder to build equity and pay off the mortgage today than it was in the 1980s, despite the friendlier rates. The high prices mean you’re financing (and slowly retiring) a much bigger debt load.

Guys, I’m an idiot. All this time I’ve spent trying not to die, I had toxic turf in my backyard. Artificial turf contains crumb rubber infill made from recycled tires, which leaches chemicals including PFAS, heavy metals, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These compounds are linked to hormone disruption, carcinogenicity, and systemic inflammation.
I don’t know how I missed it. It makes me question my basic competence in life.
What gets me is that I try so hard to survey the world of potential idiocy. Then I find out there’s a monument to idiocy sitting right in front of my face that I was blind to.
I’m removing the turf, yet I’m still stuck with this seemingly unsolvable problem of how to not be an idiot.
