By recommitting to leasehold abolition, @ZackPolanski has @UKLabour on the ropes. They told the BBC today they’re still committed to ending it. But @mtpennycook admitted here weeks ago they have no intention of abolishing leasehold, despite promising to end it in the manifesto.

@JessicaToale All you’ve done is create a 2-tier leasehold system where those with existing leases will now be trapped until either they pass from this mortal Earth or their building collapses. It also allows Freeholders to continue to milk the cash cow for next 40yrs or more.

Since it was originally bought off plan 20 years ago for £195k, it’ll have lost £95k in value. @SteveReedMP doesn’t care, Pennycook is blocking people that challenge him. #nohope

I imagine when they voted for our party in order to “end the feudal leasehold system” they expected it to be ended for them too, @mtpennycook You wouldn’t have left convicted postmasters in jail after uncovering the post office scandal - why are you doing it to leaseholder shared owners?

Correct! They will be turbocharging developer profits by having commonhold mandated on new flatted developments while condemning existing leasehold flats as legacy stock. We need commonhold for the many, not just the new.

'After a while you stop thinking about it as your own money' is exactly on point. A life-changing demand can come at any moment, with threats attached. Your money is not yours, you're just holding it until some managing agent decides it's now theirs.

Had an early doors restaurant meal as a very rare treat. I had a hard won refund for a subscription they'd put up from £20 to £120 and took it from my account. So. £20 meal. £100 into the Section 20 fund. After a while you stop thinking about it as your own money. I drive a rusty 16 year old Smart Car and yet the housing association want the equivalent value of a very nice secondhand Audi, to cover the Section 20 demand... As an artist I could have put on an exhibition with that money to get me out of here. Heartbreaking but you cannot dwell on what could have been.

@mtpennycook @cagey_optimist 1-Labour’s manifesto promised to abolish leasehold outright and I voted for that. Now we’re hearing “we’re not abolishing it” and “we’ll give a route out eventually.” Leaseholders don’t want vague promises. We need real, immediate action.

@cagey_optimist I can only reiterate what I’ve said previously. We are not abolishing leasehold outright (i.e terminating c.5 million leases overnight). Instead, we’re ending the system in this Parliament by making Commonhold the default tenure and giving existing leaseholders a clear route out.
