By recommitting to leasehold abolition, @ZackPolanski has @UKLabour on the ropes. They told the BBC today they’re still committed to ending it. But @mtpennycook admitted here weeks ago they have no intention of abolishing leasehold, despite promising to end it in the manifesto.

We're reforming the leasehold system by capping ground rent, banning new leasehold flats, and making commonhold the default. Alongside these reforms, the Government has launched the Moving to Commonhold consultation. Contribute your views here: jessicatoale.com/leaseholder-su…

@JessicaToale All you’ve done is create a 2-tier leasehold system where those with existing leases will now be trapped until either they pass from this mortal Earth or their building collapses. It also allows Freeholders to continue to milk the cash cow for next 40yrs or more.

@huntmj28 @HarryScoffin @UKLabour I’m having to auction my flat to sell it. I’ll have lost £50k since I bought it 4 years ago. Since it was originally bought off plan 20 years ago for £195k, it’ll have lost £95k in value. @SteveReedMP doesn’t care, Pennycook is blocking people that challenge him. #nohope

I imagine when they voted for our party in order to “end the feudal leasehold system” they expected it to be ended for them too, @mtpennycook You wouldn’t have left convicted postmasters in jail after uncovering the post office scandal - why are you doing it to leaseholder shared owners?
The Shared Owners' Network@SharedOwnersNet

Thousands of shared owners are trapped in potentially unsafe blocks, facing escalating costs they cannot afford and unable to sell or even remortgage. They are left in limbo, with little to no meaningful support from their housing associations.

This government can't be trusted to end the housing crisis because its ministers are bought and paid for by the developers, landlords and corporate interests who profit from it.
Vicky Spratt@Victoria_Spratt

Exclusive @theipaper, the Housing Secretary went to a “curry night” with major housing developers where exclusive “corporate tables” cost £2,000 plus VAT. inews.co.uk/news/housing-m…

@mtpennycook has lost Labour a vote from me for life. It's the same as when Lib Dems promised to abolish tuition fees and then did the exact opposite. I'll never vote for Labour again.

Correct! They will be turbocharging developer profits by having commonhold mandated on new flatted developments while condemning existing leasehold flats as legacy stock. We need commonhold for the many, not just the new.
duncan@mongrelcelt

@Mroperandi @BMancunia @HarryScoffin @FreeLeasehlders @ZackPolanski @mtpennycook @UKLabour What it does is create demand for Commonhold NBs if secondhand flats are untouchable leaseholds This exposes donating devs' influence over housing policy and Pennycooks inaction; the latter no longer inexplicable in this context Labour putting lobby profits b4 national interest

He said he will “end the leasehold system in its entirety” If that doesn’t mean abolishing it I don’t know what it means
Matthew Pennycook MP@mtpennycook

@ph7litmus I have never once suggested we’d abolish leasehold outright either in opposition or in government.

@mtpennycook @cagey_optimist Factually incorrect. A ‘clear route out’ that excludes conversion flats, housing association leaseholders, mixeduse blocks, and anyone who can’t hit 50% isn’t a route — it’s a conditional promise. Millions will remain trapped. Forever. That’s not ending the system. You are lying

@mtpennycook @cagey_optimist 1-Labour’s manifesto promised to abolish leasehold outright and I voted for that. Now we’re hearing “we’re not abolishing it” and “we’ll give a route out eventually.” Leaseholders don’t want vague promises. We need real, immediate action.

@cagey_optimist I can only reiterate what I’ve said previously. We are not abolishing leasehold outright (i.e terminating c.5 million leases overnight). Instead, we’re ending the system in this Parliament by making Commonhold the default tenure and giving existing leaseholders a clear route out.

@mtpennycook @cagey_optimist What about leaseholders in mixed tenure blocks with no route to enfranchisement? This is only going to make things worse for anyone in that situation
