I don’t hold Nigerian celebrities or billionaires to any standard normally I don’t rate them, so I wouldn’t have been moved if this was anyone else but I genuinely love Bovi. I paid for Purple Lounge access to see him after the event on top of my floor seats. I’ve been wanting to show him our picture from Asaba, back when I was hustling. Like I said, I just like the guy, I take him like a senior bro.
That said, his comments about Ike Ekweremadu just confirmed why Nigeria can’t get better. The country runs a political economy. If you’re not in bed with the “right” political class, your business will suffer. It’s the same reason all the big churches, pastors, imams and native doctors can’t call out politicians, these politicians are always in their churches, mosques and shrines, “donating” fat numbers. How do you call out your benefactor?
Bovi talked about and thanked an “SK fellow” in his words, someone who gave him financial backing for a project that would have wrecked him, and everyone in the industry confirms this person is very benevolent(“ah na so e de do o”) and supposedly wants nothing in return. Chances are very high that’s a politician or someone deep in those corridors of power.
Now, to answer Bovi on behalf of the MP he embarrassed: the UK doesn’t work like Nigeria. The three arms of government are actually separate(nobody de on another person mandate for here). An MP has zero influence over the judiciary and if the MP representing my constituency raised concerns about Ekweremadu in Parliament, come May 3rd she’d lose her seat because we’d vote her out. She’s there to represent us, not advocate for some Nigerian politician who’s been in power since I was a child while there’s still no functioning system in his own country.
And finally, these people, (the pastors, imams, artists, native doctors) should stay in the Nigeria they’ve all collectively helped destroy, Yes, Bovi’s family live in the UK, as do many of them, but it’s them who spoiled the country with personal-interest politics and thievery. Stop coming here to make money from shows. Go back to your dear Nigeria.
