Apologies for the background noise, life on @Space_Station is loud! Without daily exercise on the ISS, we would lose significant muscle mass and bone density, since we don’t have the daily loading on our bodies that Earth’s gravitational environment provides. We have the ARED 🏋️‍♀️ (Advanced Resistive Exercise Device), an engineering marvel that can be configured into a large number of weight lifting exercises, a cycle ergometer 🚲 (think a stationary bike with no handlebars and no seat — not needed in space!), and a treadmill. 🏃‍♀️ I started exercise right away, and it was so cool. Complete muscle memory! Really feels like I never left. Here’s a peek into our daily exercise routine!

The ARED is genius - counterweights up to 600lbs simulate heavy squats/deadlifts in microgravity. The inertia isolation is critical too; without it, every squat would wobble the entire station. CEVIS (the bike) uses magnetic resistance instead of weights. Muscle memory really does carry over - that's the beauty of consistent training.

@Astro_Jessica @Space_Station With the nextgen space stations can we spin them to create 1 G on the outer parts of the spinning station?

@Astro_Jessica @Space_Station Due to this need astronauts at the ISS are probably some of the most fittest humans in the entire world, only to be not ON the world.

I'm always amazed/dumbfounded that they don't require long hair in a bun or at least ponytail, and surprised most do not make the decision themselves regardless. I would think you'd be more concerned about long hairs getting loose and clogging stuff up. It looks cool and fun, but isn't the safety of the ISS and other Astros far more important?

@Astro_Jessica @Space_Station You are, beautiful, the edge of the sword, a lioness, you can do 4 reps of 12, go for it, take it out of orbit. Less talk and more exercise. 😂👍👍💎

@Astro_Jessica @Space_Station I know this is pretty minor in the overall scheme of things but I think it would be so cool to have your hair drifting around all the time. I have long hair so I’m imagining what it would feel like for it just to float.

@Astro_Jessica @Space_Station If space has limited or no gravity, what benefit is gained by lifting 'weights' in a zero gravity environment? Who authorised lifting weights to this altitude? What is the cost benefit analysis on this?

@Astro_Jessica @Space_Station Also, because the physics of every action has equal and opposite reaction, these exercise devices have to be inertia isolated from the body of the ISS or their movements would be imparted on every part of the ISS all the way to the end of the solar panels, making them wobble.
