Gary Schildhorn was driving to work one morning when he got a call from his son. "Dad, I've been in an accident. I hit a pregnant woman. They've arrested me." His son asked him to call the number of a court-assigned attorney. "I just met with your son. He didn't pass the sobriety test. The court set bail at $120,000." But Gary's instincts kicked in. He paused, something felt off. The first voice on the phone wasn't his son at all. It was AI-generated, cloned from just a few seconds of audio. Gary was the intended victim of a deepfake attack. Unfortunately, he is not alone. Millions of older adults are targeted by sophisticated scams each year, causing an estimated $81 billion in losses for Americans over 60 years old. That’s why I am proud to announce that Adaptive Security is launching a free training course designed to protect older adults from AI-powered scams. The training features real interviews with 5 brave individuals targeted by AI, crypto, and impersonation fraud, as well as interactive exercises like a live AI call and a “make your own deepfake” module. The course also includes guidance from Brady Finta of the National Elder Fraud Coordination Center (NEFCC) and leading cybersecurity lawyer Edward Chang from Morrison Foerster. Brady and Ed share their own helpful tips, along with the best law enforcement resources and reporting channels available to those who have been targeted.
