Years ago I participated in "fight apathy" on the delusion we would all sit in a bar discussing nerdy things like corporate integration. Now no ones apathetic and everyone is discussing stupider things. I regret my participation.

I break with my wonkier friends when I say this kind of kludgy program sucks. It’s basically - we have a shitty system (vacancy control) that we can’t fix because it’s a sacred cow, so let’s subsidize another broken market (insurance) rather than fix that too.

@matthewstoller So you want to 10x the price and create a monopoly? Why do all the “anti-monopolist” people on this site want to recreate monopolies?

@yeselson @baseballcrank @jadler1969 “Capable of repetition yet evading review” isn’t something “republicans” made up, it’s perfectly legitimate legal doctrine, likewise, when Obama tried to circumvent an existing ruling that *did* go through oral argument, staying early is appropriate

@baseballcrank @jadler1969 Maybe engage the content too. The tedious fantasy that the Republicans are Olympian and procedurally neutral and the Democrats are just partisan hacks just took another blow. They are all partisan hacks when the stakes are high enough.

Hey, New York, the e-file tax mandate isn’t a *terrible* idea, a lot of people are stuck on their mailing ways if you to change that behavior great it’s just uh … why do I have to pay for it? If you’re gonna mandate I use this thing provide the ability to do so for free?

@Celiksei @buccocapital Well there’s a difference between leveraging data you provided and stealing it. I happen to think AI training is fair use but not every practice, for example, Anthropic pirating works and training on that, is valid

@buccocapital Whole point of capitalism is to extract the public resources and refine them to produce value for the end users. If people complain about AI leveraging their data to sell them a product then they should have the same energy against all the companies in the world.

The vibes are turning against Dario. I expect this to accelerate until he changes his messaging Why? Because AI broke the social contract of the internet. For the last 20 years, people shared their data with tech companies as part of a *symbiotic* relationship. The services got better. Traffic went to your site. Network effects made transactions liquid and simple. AI broke that contract. AI sucked in the collective IP of civilization and paid out nothing for the inputs. And now Dario goes on TV every day to tell us he is going to break the economy and our children will be poor. But he did that. It’s economic gaslighting. Dario is the embodiment of the “We’re all trying to find the guy who did this” meme and people are not going to sit there and take it AI needs a better, more inclusive message. I expect he will realize this eventually. The question is whether he will realize it before it’s too late.

@DrewSav What’s bad? The point of it is to prevent the government from abusing how long the appellate process takes to implement a policy that’s already been struck down. Obama did that, so the court intervened. Why is that bad?

@EdwardKenney20 @whignewtons See also Biden student loans. There is a policy of when a plaintiff or the government does this, they already lost but they keep doing it, they face review much quicker.

@EdwardKenney20 @whignewtons But that’s exactly what happened here. The Supreme Court had already ruled against Obama previously, and the Obama admin was openly bragging about making cosmetic changes and reimplementing the policy, letting that get struck down, and doing it again and again

In 2014 and 2015, the Court used the “shadow docket” to stop Texas’ anti-abortion restrictions from going into effect while the case was pending. The left was thrilled with the shadow docket at that point—years before this case even existed…

Secret memos by Supreme Court justices, obtained by The New York Times, show how they decided to bypass time-tested procedures and create the modern “shadow docket,” a controversial new way of doing business. nyti.ms/4csrD0l

@tonyannett All the memos revealed is that the Obama administration was trying to circumvent the courts ruling so they intervened earlier. Or are you saying the president should be allowed to use gamesmanship to avoid rulings? Someone inform Trump …

Will be interesting to see how the NBA manages games not being able to be seen at a lot of public spaces that aren’t set up for Prime streaming. My gym usually has playoff basketball on, but no games were on today because they still have a standard cable feed on their TVs

@richmintz Which fees? Are the drivers not paying the toll? Or is it just bs funds that Uber is forced to pay into?

So ridiculous, yall must know. For the last month I’ve been using Empower ride hailing app in NYC. (They charge drivers a monthly fee instead of taking 20%, I believe). Cars always available. And always much, much cheaper than Uber. Tonight was particularly insane. LaGuardia airport to home: - Uber: $125 (criminal) - Empower: $30 IDK guys it feels like $5 Via days. Don’t know which good soldier built this app, or why. But it feels like they’ve punched a hole in the absurd NYC ride hailing pricing schemes that we all had come to just accept.

It was perhaps a mistake to select MetLife Stadium for the final game. Atlanta and Philadelphia aren't having these problems. You can easily walk to their stadiums or take regular public transport.
Mat Of That Ilk@mat_coyg

@ajlamesa Really puts the focus on FIFA insisting on closing on-site parking. This is not Europe. They insisted on the public transportation model which in Europe is subsidized without question. This is what they get. Almost 28000 spaces they chose to not utilize for their intended purpose

Sticking it to fans is not the answer. Decisions like this ensure that the next time New York City hosts the world, partnering with New Jersey won’t even be on the table.
The New York Times@nytimes

From @TheAthleticFC: New Jersey Transit confirmed on Friday that World Cup match goers will be charged $150 for a return rail trip from New York's Penn Station to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey this summer. Tickets are ordinarily priced at $12.90. nyti.ms/4sHcLzR

So lets get this straight… NJ transit is 12xing ticket prices. But LIMITING the ticket volume to 40K. MetLife no where near anything relies on 28K parking spots but is prohibiting fans from using ANY parking. And the rideshare lot at MetLife is already impossible to use.🤦‍♂️
CBS News@CBSNews

President and CEO of NJ Transit Kris Kolluri told reporters Friday that regional transportation tickets for FIFA World Cup matches will be sold on a "first come, first serve" basis. He said "once 40,000 tickets are done, that is the end of it." Those unable to secure a ticket to get to the game will "have to go somewhere else," he said.
