Not sure how much you may like to see tech art here, but here is an example of what can be done with pre-cashed destruction. cheap but looks cool. I bet that BF used the same or nearly the same technique.

dev day 495: I did a deep dive into my particle shaders to get them looking more volumetric. It took a good while to crack the problem, but I managed to get a decently volumetric feel to my particles! #solodev #indiegamdev #buildinpublic #gamedev
