@TwiterIsTrash8 @KelynCran i personally don't make such a clear distinction, I think they're bascially the same thing, both addictive in the same way

@BenjiGameDev @KelynCran was it GMTK or someone that divided RNG into two things: 1) RNG that determines the outcome/reward 2) RNG that randomizes the game state beforehand (shuffling the deck before the card game) 1 is the one that causes problems and can be abused into gambling

@BenjiGameDev When I started I didn't even know you could sell them on your own/ make money off them/ owned the rights (Unity Engine) I was just making/uploading to sites like indieDB & Kongregate. Even if 1 person found them, I thought, "There must be something wrong with this individual."

this really sucks. but yeah, none of my games have ever turned a profit, they're all deep in the red if you count my time. I think that's normal for 99% of games, but it can still be a nasty surprise to discover you're not in the 1% yet again

I hate to admit this but I launched my first video game and it actually FAILED. And I want to be honest with you, and with myself about the reality of it 🧵

i think if we're looking at it objectively, there's very little difference between someone sat at a slot machine hitting the button all day long versus someone walking back and forth in a field in Pokemon for hours trying to find a shiny diglett. the intention of the casio manager versus the game designer is very different of course - one actively seeks to exploit their customer and the other doesn't. but the outcome is uncomfortably similar

@BenjiGameDev @KelynCran I see Our monkey brain just loves RNG, I just embrace our human nature People usually abuse this to turn other people into addicts, when other devs turn it into harmless toys I see it as a good thing, it steals audience from actual gambling or do you think it's a gateway drug?

Game devs overthink this way too much. Just publish the game. Worst case, nobody plays it. Best case, it blows up and changes everything. You’ll never know which one it is unless you ship it.

@BenjiGameDev @KelynCran does that include games that are inspired by casino aesthetics but do NOT have any stake, be it money, long time (Gacha, XP boost in MMO) and the like? Like Balatro or CloverPit?

@TeamBravoGames absolutely. interesting though that it took 40 years for us to start making games that are just straight up slot machines - you would think someone would have hit on that winning formula a long time ago

@KelynCran @GameproHiljan I'm not saying RNG is always used to deliberately get us addicted - although that is true of some genres. My point is that randomness in games engages with the exact same psychological mechanisms as gambling, whether intentional or not

@BenjiGameDev @GameproHiljan I get what you're saying, but I wouldn't go that far. I've never thought "oh, man, I've just got to start a new game of Civilization so I can see how good my start is". I think some games use randomness for the purpose of replayability, rather than addiction.

@KelynCran i reserve "gambleslop" specifically for games based on traditional gambling RNG mechanics - roulettes, slots, dice, lottery tickets, etc. that stuff is pure scum and I don't like it. beyond that it gets a bit fuzzy

@BenjiGameDev Where is the gambleslop line, in your eyes? Do roguelikes or gacha games count?

@IsaiahToth_Dev more like - all your favourite games probably also had elements of gambling in them, and that's partly why you liked them. at the most basic level it's the thrill of getting a straight piece in Tetris just when you need it

@BenjiGameDev If I were to be incredibly reductive I'd argue gambling mechanics (risk/reward, chance) + "play" mechanics (experimentation, discovery, personal improvement) are all foundational to what we call "games". A bunch of primal itch scratching and practice

@RobinPoedev you're right - I've managed to piss off fans of Sonic, Roblox, Pokemon, Miyazaki - and they're all uniquely odd
