What is the biological significance of a previously unrecognized post-translational modification? #Grantee @MattooLab’s curiosity-driven question aims to elucidate the role of #GMPylation! 🎉Congrats Dr. Mattoo! bit.ly/HFgrants 🙏#HFScout Joseph Mougous @LifeAtPurdue @UW

Today I gave a talk in Namur with a special guest: Guy Cornelis, the scientist that discovered T3SS and who was my postdoc advisor. He is retired now, came to my talk. I could not resist the temptation to take a selfie when I started my seminar! Academia has these great moments

@IsbergRalph And we @UCSD got lucky when Elio moved to San Diego & invited Hanna for a seminar. She left us all spellbound with her superbly crafted tales of deciphering MazEF function. It was thrilling! The MazEF field continued on to evolve into an even more fascinating system.

She used to give a regular seminar every September at Tufts, invited as Elio Schaechter's cousin. She liked us so much, she kept coming every year after Elio retired. Every year, a new story, the most amazing being MazEF.

Hanna, my 10 years next door neighbour since I started my own lab. She was a strong opinionated and rigour scientist even at age 95 or so (not sure exactly…). Never skipped a day in the lab, getting help from my students with references for her manuscript just this month!

@IBiofilms @HebrewU Very sorry to hear this news. My deepest condolences. I heard Hanna give a talk at @UCSD during my postdoc. She explained complicated bacterial phenotypes with such eloquence that several in the audience jumped up in applause. Brava, Hanna!

Prof. Hanna Engelberg-Kulka @HebrewU passed away last night. Hanna was an extraordinary, original and brave microbiologist who discovered the first chromosomal #toxin-#antitoxin system in #Escherichia coli. Together with Prof. Gadi Glaser, she named the system #mazEF (which in Hebrew means Ma Ze? or What is it?). Citation is here: pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn… in @PNASNews. She was a mentor to @RonenHazanLab , Prof. Itai Benhar @McbbTau, and more, including me. And I will greatly miss her...

The term PAMP (pathogen associated molecular pattern) is in the immunology lexicon. But what does pattern really mean? We need diverse ligands for a single receptor to decipher a pattern. LPS receptors, which detect non-LPS structures, may hold the key to answer this question.

I am thrilled to say that our work is now online @CellCellPress ! I've analysed protein structures for quite some time, but @Robb_Mallik, who co-led this work, took these analyses to yet another level - 🧵👇 sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

🔥Cell biology meets structuromics🔥 1000s of proteins assemble co-translationally but we don't know why🤷‍♂️ @Robb_Mallik found it’s all about protein 🧩structure🧩, with implications for #gene_expression, #proteostasis, #evolution & #mRNAlocalization 🧵👇 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Is this real, or is it excessive AI hype? New paper claims that an AI foundation model achieves experimental-level accuracy in predicting gene expression even in previously unseen cell types." I'll read the paper, but don't believe it for a second nature.com/articles/s4158…
