Why is Paul McEnroe (BS @PurdueECE ’60) a Purdue Engineering hero? At @IBM, he and his team transformed the retail industry by inventing the barcode, now ubiquitous on products worldwide. Additionally, this team — known as Consumer Transactions Systems —developed the magnetic code and strip for retail use, as well as barcode scanners, both hand-held (for which McEnroe received the patent) and fixed, integrated into checkout stands. On June 26, 1974, at Marsh Supermarket in Troy, Ohio, the barcode on a pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit gum was the first grocery item to be scanned. Eventually, the code went on to change the way people shop. It also paved the way for superstores and their massive inventories. McEnroe later advanced to IBM’s group director of systems development, responsible for overseeing creation of 90% of IBM’s products worldwide. #OurHeroes #VictoriesandHeroes
