@Redcows4ever @mopaksus Heifer calves don’t make a return, so for this discussion of productive cows versus bringing in heifers to replace, they need to be valued once they are at a productive state(calving). There is a real expense involved, getting them to that productive point.

I see your 7.3 and raise you a turbo 6.9.

Tales from the Feedyard (Uncensored)@silagechopper
A sure sign of spring is when the 7.3 comes out. Some of the best things on this earth start like shit.
English

@Redcows4ever @mopaksus Sorry, I’m talking CAD. Conversion to USD is $5800 ish.
English

@Redcows4ever @mopaksus Well, if we want to play the opportunity cost thing on the back end, we better not forget that equation on the front end.
English

@Redcows4ever We do it to move the genetic needle on what is perceived as “old”. Producers would be infinitely more profitable if the new “old” was 10, not 5 or 6. If you don’t select for it, you’ll never achieve it. Some people don’t understand this.
English

@Redcows4ever @mopaksus Not much…like about $8k. Then add in the extra management to continue developing them vs a cow that is on coast and is bought and paid for. A cow that is a proven producer is also a lot less risk than a new heifer too.

@coffee_anytime I wouldn’t eat anything from someone who wears pajamas during work hours.
English

@Redcows4ever Costs too much to replace a cow who consistently has calves unassisted.
Cows will stay around here to 15+ consistently
English

@CattleMafia No thanks. Rather sell a 10 year old bred cow and replace her with a home grown heifer than buy a bunch of old junk and suckle calves all spring.
English

@Redcows4ever So your saying buying a apx 15yo cow that calves for 1000 bucks is bad. 😂 wean and make a killing.

English

@Redcows4ever Bought this cow as a 5 year old in my first group of cows I ever purchased. Was always a lead cow rotating pastures. Raised me 7 good calves in a row but this year her calf didn’t make it. She was worth $2800 as a cull cow. I don’t understand wanting them to die at your place.

English

@newtexplicit They are valuable as short term cows to someone. Sell her when she has a few good years left and replace her with a heifer.
English

@Redcows4ever They will have calves until they can’t. If they are breed they are valuable.
English

@Redcows4ever Its a sign of good fertility and longevity that they can stay in the herd that long. Good genetics to keep heifers from.
English

@Redcows4ever If she’s bred. She stays. Calves are worth a lot of money
English

@ThoughtCrimes80 Might have been a better use of the money she spent on tattoos…
