I officially withdrew from medical school. I can’t keep sacrificing for such an abusive field. Caring for my mom through her cancer journey put so much into perspective and I can’t leave her to finish a degree I was already so burnt out in. While it’s devastating to stop… 1/?

@MDinWaiting As you can imagine I was certainly no where near the top of my class as a result. I drove a car duck taped together and prayed every morning it wouldn’t explode to make it to my rotations. I couldn’t afford dental care and ended up later having severe abscesses and loosing teeth

@MDinWaiting The whole medical education system is dependent on most trainees coming from some amount of privilege. My status as a foster youth made navigating medical school and residency extremely challenging. I worked part time in medical school and lived off credit cards to survive.

I recently had the pleasure of talking to Derrick Stephens of underdog DREAMS. He and his team won the RWJ Clinical Scholars Grant which awarded him 525k to create a multi-faceted approach for improving the physical and mental health and education of Floridan former foster youth.
