Per WNBA Canada, the Toronto Tempo vs Washington Mystics season opener on TSN was the most-watched WNBA regular season game ever in Canada. Live coverage of the Tempo vs. Mystics game reached 1 million Canadian viewers on TSN and CTV2.

The first Canada match in Toronto is 4 weeks from Friday. I’m told at least 3500-4000 tickets are still unsold. Canada Soccer put tickets for all 3 Group matches in all 3 price categories on sale today. My friend sent me a screenshot after logging on to examine the prices. I get the once-in-lifetime value of this, I truly do - but there’s a been a clear combination of gouging, AND miscalculating the market. They’ve been unable to sell 45K tickets in Toronto/55K in VAN. Imagine if it was 70K+, like most of the NFL stadiums. The public will always set the price in the modern marketplace - not the other way around.

@UrBoutToLose Leagues are off their highs. NWSL attendance fell 5% last year. So far this season, avg YoY attendance is flat. WSL attendance fell almost 10% last season. Up 2% for this season.

@JohnMolinaro @NorthernSuperLg I said bring NWSL to Toronto and they gave us this. 🤷🏾‍♂️ The other women’s teams are selling out games. They also play in American leagues. This is equivalent Inter Toronto but we need a TFC. Nobody’s gonna admit it but that’s the issue.

@DABailey62 @MctagueNicole @shanelpratap TSN avg demo is 55+ which is a shallow pool for potential supporters. Tv hasn't been a top 5 driver of MLS growth. Pre-Apple, Caps averaged <70k on TSN. Last yr's MLS Cup Final only got 284k on TSN. 78% drop from TFC's 2016 MLS Cup viewership.

@MctagueNicole @shanelpratap In 2nd yr of Apple tv deal, Caps attendance hit a record high in 2024 & was in the middle of the MLS pack for 2025. 14 Caps matches/yr are still on trad tv - more than even hard cores watch.

@GCM1979 @Whatever66102 There is a hierarchy in Canada. National team football > club football. If into club football, 3 European leagues and league of native/parents country before any local league. If into local football, league before Cup play (unless team makes a run).

@Whatever66102 Those aren't either/or situations, they aren't happening at the same time. The competition is other sports. The FA Cup has magic. No magic in the Can Champ.

why isn't the #canchamp more popular in Canada? This is a game that should bring out fans on droves in all matches. I was out last night watching the game on my phone & no one had any idea what I was watching. The promotion of this competition needs to improve drastically.

@CanuckTarheel @GCM1979 TSN/SN have never been interested. Pre-OS, they never showed R1 matches as happening this week & didn't pay for rights/production. Last yr, a couple of matches were on TSN only because of a barter deal for CANMNT matches with OS.

@GCM1979 My opinion is that the general sports fan can't wrap their head around a parallel cup competition. The other thing is that as it's on OneSoccer, so Bell and Rogers don't have much interest in promoting a competition they don't have rights to.

@Kenneth604BC @BenSteiner00 No spine since Qatar squad only had 2 players from Caps academy. Only 2 BC-born but both didn't go to Caps academy. 86 squad had 60% BC-born with no academy. CANWNT has also seen BC players falloff but to a lesser degree. Youth women sides have seen a larger dropoff.

Steiner's right. The Whitecaps academy isn't just developing players — it's developing the spine of #CanMNT and #CanWNT. Toronto FC tonight: out of the Voyageurs Cup at the hands of a CPL side, in front of a half-empty BMO. Vancouver: 8-1-1, sold out, producing national team talent at every level. Move the wrong club, lose the right pipeline. #SaveTheCaps #VWFC

I’m kinda new to the sports and politics beat but is it weird that @TheAthletic, which the NYT bought and basically replaced its sports investigative team is running ads for the very events that it’s supposed to look into?

@n2henry Time not an issue. Cord cutting & less hours watching trad tv means not enough viewers/ad $ to warrant paying to fill more time. TSN still shows 42 Cdn MLS team games & 80+ overall. Way more than even hard cores ever watch.

I want to state upfront that this is a great deal for WNBA and the TEMPO re: TSN and i will definitely be watching. But this is also a downstream impact of the really bad deal MLS signed with Apple. TSN loss of all three MLS teams from there schedule opened up a ton of time

@__LFF__ @AsaRehman WJ happened as the heydays of cable tv got started. Growth mode = big budget/risk taking. Today, TSN has 50% less subs, ad $ gone online & majority of u35 don't watch trad tv. Secular decline mode means Rogers just offered buyout to 50% of staff & Bell laid off 8-9k in 5 yrs.

@ravira A city like Calgary could easily support an MLS team. Two million in the metro area. Instead we have a CSL team in a 5000 seat stadium. Makes no sense to me why MLS doesn’t look at some Canadian cities. The weather might be an issue but Calgary gets Chinooks.

MLS, unlike the old NASL, seems like a league of posers to me. The NASL was unabashedly North American while the MLS tries to be British. Bring back the old nicknames the NASL had and let's talk about fields, uniforms, and shutouts instead of pitches, kits, and clean sheets.

@Kenneth604BC Attendance not a top 5 factor in Caps moving. But ticket prices in bottom 5 of MLS is an issue. Key issue is Caps aren't worth US$500m without a stadium. And MLS won't approve sale below $500m as it will mean a drop in expansion fees from what San Diego paid.

LA Galaxy v @WhitecapsFC. Kickoff. Plenty of empty seats again. Earlier today: Toronto FC drew 5,000 to a 45,000-seat BMO Field. Vancouver: near sellouts every weekend, 8-1-0 on the pitch. And @MLS thinks Vancouver is the relocation candidate? Read the room, @DonGarber. #SaveTheCaps #VWFC

@Kenneth604BC @WhitecapsFC @MLS @dongarber For starters there was 19k+ yesterday at BMO. Secondly using the temporary seating to back your point is embarrassing. Thirdly MLSE OWNS THE STADIUM while the Whitecaps haves to rent BC Place when they play. It’s not about the record it’s about the money to continue operation

One of the largest reasons the NBA is seeing a decline in viewership is this: They simply don’t respect the audiences time. They’re the only major sports league to begin a game 15-20 minutes after advertised…
