@atlanticesque Yeah. Went back there in 2024 and was in total shock. The entire downtown clogged with drug users, fights between homeless women at the bus depot-they have it all. It was not like this 10 years ago

The sad thing is that it is the best possible place to raise children. And there were lots of kids when mine were little, so many babies born in our town the same year as my twins (2000). But then it all stopped and most of those kids moved away. You’d think internet would make such places more popular but the opposite happened

Living in a rapidly aging rural place sometimes feels like being the caretaker of a shockingly beautiful mausoleum. Vermont—my verdant but childless necropolis.

@OldHollowTree Where have the young people gone, and why? I suspect it's more than just affordability of housing. Would anyone there tolerate trying to attract new young people from out of state?

Bongs can't help but do this as it flows through their blood. Is dickhead aware that the Pope publicly brought up the killing of the French in Algeria? Or is he just ignoring it?

@ajlamesa Jordan Bardella, Georgia Meloni, Geert Wilders etc all have something in common beyond being far right. They are from neighbourhoods that are anything other than quaint and charming. The Europe tourists and most expats never see.

Jordan Bardella, the 30-year old who may be France's next president, is an unusual member of the French political class: a grandchild of Italian immigrants from the banlieu of Saint-Denis with an American first name. Michael Behrent profiles him: compactmag.com/article/the-ne…

@TheStalwart @razibkhan Hampshire college was one of the better quirky little colleges. Several have closed in Vermont as well: Goddard and Sterling come to mind

This kind of development is really depressing to me. All kinds of weird little colleges in the Northeast are closing. Nobody wants to double major in literature and kombucha-making anymore. Everyone just wants to work for Jane Street or an AI lab.

BREAKING: After years of financial struggles, Hampshire College will close after the 2026 fall semester. I obtained an email sent to the college community this morning that confirms the board of Trustees have voted to permanently close the experimental institution. @WAMCNews

Helder Nozima@nozima

There's a certain type of American for whom these kinds of questions will always yield an "all or nothing" type answer. To say one should never drink alone, OK, this makes sense. Loneliness is worse than boozing; if you drink amongst friends it's a net positive. But ZERO alcohol? Coming from an American man of the same ilk that pushed for temperance, prohibition, some of whom have even had a habit of contorting the Bible to make it seem as if Christ was drinking grape juice? Yeah I'm not surprised such a fellow is achieving the same conclusions in secular terms. The ghosts of his teetotaler ancestors (not to speak of his Mormon parents) are speaking through him, and he's using "science" as a foil. The really detrimental thing is almost always OVERCORRECTION.
Bryan Johnson@bryan_johnson

Friends, stop drinking alcohol. Not cut back. Eliminate. > alcohol increases cortisol > disrupts REM sleep > accelerates epigenetic aging > shrinks hippocampal volume > elevates resting heart rate > raises inflammatory markers > impairs glucose metabolism for 16 hrs One drink does that.

@homemakinghunny Stand mixer. I got so much use out of my Kitchen Aid. Does much more than just make bread dough

Ok homemakers/makers of food from scratch people: We are looking into buying either a stand mixer or a good bread maker. I am leaning toward stand mixer because I feel like it’s a lot more versatile. The main goal is to be making our own bread consistently. But I do make a lot of things homemade and I feel like a stand mixer is better for that. But the bread maker takes a lot of the work out of making bread for you so maybe that would be more convenient for the purposes of bread making. But I also can’t make buns or smaller portion bread items with the bread maker. Unfortunately, a KitchenAid is out of the budget, but we’re looking at the Hamilton Beach stand mixer, which seems pretty good as well and comes with dough hooks, whisk attachment, etc. and for the bread mixer, we’re looking at one by Starfrit.
