There are several designs that are being built in Idaho that will be operational this year. Project Pele: Developed by BWXT, this is a transportable microreactor designed for the Department of Defense. It is expected to be tested at INL in 2026, aiming to be the first Gen IV reactor to generate electricity in the US. MARVEL: A microreactor designed to produce 1-5MW of electricity, intended for remote communities and industrial heat, expected to be operational around 2026. Aalo-X: Aalo Atomics is constructing an experimental modular reactor, aiming for criticality by July 4, 2026, near the INL campus. Oklo Aurora: Oklo is working with the DOE on a pilot program to deploy their fast-fission powerhouse at INL, with initiatives aiming for operation by mid-2026. Other states that will bring them online this year. Tennessee: Kairos Power is building the Hermes demonstration reactor (a fluoride salt-cooled high-temperature reactor) in Oak Ridge. It could be operational as early as 2026 Texas: Natura Resources is building a 1 MW Molten Salt Reactor (MSR-1) on the Abilene Christian University campus, with a goal of being the first Gen IV reactor to deploy in the U.S. by 2026. These will come online later. MCRE (Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment): A public-private partnership (Southern Company, TerraPower, Core Power) creating the world's first fast-spectrum, molten salt-fueled reactor. It uses high-temperature, liquid fuel and is expected to operate around 2028-2030. Wyoming: TerraPower is building its first Natrium plant (a sodium-cooled fast reactor) in Kemmerer, at the site of a retiring coal plant. It is expected to be operational by 2030. Texas: X-energy is constructing four Xe-100 high-temperature gas-cooled reactors at a Dow Chemical plant in Seadrift. Washington: X-energy and Energy Northwest are partnering with Amazon Web Services to deploy up to 12 small modular reactors (SMRs) using X-energy's Gen IV design. Virginia: Dominion Energy and Amazon are collaborating to bring SMRs to the state to power massive data center clusters
