@MayorFrey I find these numbers incredibly hard to believe. Can we get a line list of each business and how much it lost between those specifics dates, compared to their numbers from the previous year during the same time period?

@StarTribune These people have absolutely no idea how to run what is essentially a multi-million dollar business. Completely incompetent

Keep hearing about how Uptown is dead, but it seems like people are just going to the wrong places

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has been named one of the Top 100 Most Influential People of 2026. The article even cites his infamous “Get the f*ck out of Minneapolis” press conference.

It’s amazing how many businesses treat the customer like crap now. So in the interest of positivity, what’s a business you’ve recently had a great customer service experience with?

@NortonMpls @GeoffreySerdar Almost the same footprint as what Uptown is from Hennepin between 31st and Lake. Minneapolis should use it as a case study to improve that area of Uptown, which has always been the center of that area. Duh

Uptown vacant retail cant just turn into housing. Capital only goes to safe spots with real outside spending and growth potential. Not dead zones with no vibrancy. Uptown blew up with apartments back when it was the suburban fun zone. Burb kids and their money flooded the Hennepin corridor and kept everything thriving. That engine is gone now with Minneapolis declining overall. No outside dollars coming in anymore. More than anything we gotta get the junkies and criminals out first. Open drug use and homelessness are pushing everyone away. Security at that parking garage next to Seven Points had to throw people out 46 times in January 2025. This January it exploded to over 1200 times. Thats how bad the disorder is. Without clearing that mess more dollars keep leaving. Dont take my word for it. The proof is rents still dropping or flat. Uptown is already one of the cheapest urban rental markets anywhere. Median rent 1473 as of April 2026. Thats 23 percent below national average per Zumper. Average around 1699 per RentCafe with basically zero growth. Rents are soft because decline plus crime left too much supply and not enough demand. Uptown West Calhoun vacancy at 7.3 percent. Commercial values dropped another 4.9 percent last year. Somali Mall works because outsiders drive in with money made elsewhere and pump it into their businesses. Without fixing safety first and bringing back outside spending as the base new private housing wont happen. Only way is government subsidies. That means squeezing taxpayers more raising costs chasing businesses out and speeding up the strangulation cycle. Is falling rents what you want. Its already happening and proving the exodus. But then why add more housing while rents keep dropping. Whats your real plan to rebuild vibrancy first. How do we break this without hitting the root causes. Would love to hear what @rhett_carlson thinks @NortonMpls @BradSchaeppi When Sherman, Walton, Gassen all say never again - all of who really put effort into the area, all won’t - what makes you think there will be residential development?

@SneezyPenguin Uptown isn’t a suburban fun zone now, it’s a neighborhood

@GeoffreySerdar There are multimillion dollar condos less than a block from there, and a major development going in on that block. Retail is dead and we need more housing. Agree that the building environment isn’t ideal right now because of cost inputs, but Uptown is still a great place.

Minneapolis' streets may seem a bit brighter. Mayor Jacob Frey says crews have been working to replace 26 miles worth of copper wire stolen from lights. "We're proud to report that that backlog of over 700 lights out is gone. They are now lit," says Frey. audacy.com/wccoradio/news…

When thieves went after our street lights, we didn’t wait. Our Public Works crews got to work—and locked in a long-term fix. We’ve now restored 26 miles of copper wire, or over 700 lights, making our streets safer for everyone who uses them.
