@NotifyNYC @NWSNewYorkNY Mmmm yeah it's more than just Staten Island. Brooklyn is getting hammered right now. Never in my life have heard the thunder at the same time as seeing the lightning until right now. And I haven't seen this much rain fall this fast since Ida.

Agents will become a common way people shop. So today we are releasing 3 tools to make adding commerce to those agents trivial:
- Checkout Kit: embed commerce widgets and checkout(!) directly into your agent and chat. This is already being used by Microsoft’s @Copilot.
- Shopify Catalog: low latency global product search across millions of merchants
- Universal Cart: shop from any store, anywhere, in one cart
With these, you can build seamless embedded commerce experiences quickly, starting with all the best products by the best merchants in the world instead of having to sign them all up individually. No need to build a complex new checkout, or dealing with regulatory marketplace rules. Commerce just plugs in and feels seamless in conversations.
We believe commerce should be everywhere people are, so we’re making that as easy as possible for the AI age.

@levelsio It is HILARIOUS to read all these comments concerned for “preservation of culture” and “illegal immigrants” and “we’re not the welfare wallet of the world” 🤣 Are Western countries not fat off the stolen spoils of imperialism/colonization/coup d’état of the “third world”
English

So a few things:
I think the uncomfortable truth is that many of the immigrants that come to Portugal (and rest of Southern Europe) particularly South Asia work really hard, many work harder than Portuguese because they have more at stake
Majority of the Uber drivers are South Asian, their cars are generally cleaner and they're much friendlier than the very frustrated, stressed and angry native Portuguese Uber drivers (who are probably angry cause they getting squeezed out of the market by immigrants to be fair)
99% of the South Asians in Portugal I talked to are very honest about their game plan:
- Stay in Portugal 5 years then get the passport
- They work hard, in farming, factories as Uber driver
- Often their wife also works, but they don't register as a couple. Why? Well....
- A large share of them often work illegally (as in unregistered), while registering as unemployed and apply for free welfare benefits which are very easy to get in Portugal, this is 100% welfare fraud
- A lot of the money (both work + welfare) is sent back to families in their home countries, some of the money is invested in real estate at home or in places like Dubai
- Once they get their Portuguese passport after 5 years, they get instant access to the European Union, can live anywhere and they say they will move to UK or Germany, for better work opportunities (and possibly welfare too)
You have to understand one thing, to us this feels like dishonest fraud and it absolutely is but to them they're just hacking the system without considering much about the long term damage
One thing I learnt is the South Asians I met were all very friendly to me and they're just trying to get themselves out of poverty, you gotta imagine what you would do in their situ
What we have to do in Europe is completely shutdown welfare for new immigrants first 10-20 years or so or at least until you've paid net into the system enough

@levelsio Has this massive 3rd world immigrant inflow affected your life here in Portugal in any way? I’m not sure how long you’ve lived here for, but the increase has been exponential these last 7 years

@psiddiqshow Finland isn’t a dry climate. LA literally gets its water from the Colorado River. It would be a desert if there weren’t any dams funneling water into the majority of SoCal.

I just left the hellscape formerly know as Pacific Palisades where I’ve lived for 26 years. I’m mad at what I saw. Our politicians have failed us. Unprepared, unimaginative, understaffed, now overwhelmed. Heads must roll for this disaster. I personally saw 100+ homes fully engulfed. @RickCarusoLA just mentioned water wasn’t working in the fire hydrants- WTF?! (I took this video around Pali High. Total destruction. )

@MichaelDChaney @rails Quickbooks is useless, they categorize incorrectly, they dont import tags, category or notes. I unsubscribed this year and made a spreadsheet that actually tracks and categorizes my business expenses correctly and calculates taxes on my salary as it changes during the year.
English

Okay, @rails folks. Three things are obvious:
1. Quickbooks has gone off the rails in terms of pricing.
2. It's "accounting". It literally hasn't changed in the last couple hundred years.
3. In terms of a Rails project, it's small and easy to replace.
Let's talk about getting a team together and simply writing the replacement, perhaps as a ONCE-style project with a saas capability as well.
It's possible to do this with a modern stack:
1. Rails 8
2. sqlite3
3. tailwind
Anybody want to put this together?
