I don’t even look at the story! Anything with too many comments tends to just be some annoying back and forth

I really don’t like that when lobsters removes a story it also deletes the comments. There was some really good commentary by @mitchellh attached to my 996 post and now I can’t read it any more.

@mitsuhiko Really wish we had a way to open a new connection in pg within the same transaction for this kind of reason (I think a lot of people up their CI spend and just don’t write deep integration tests tho….)

In the past I usually wrote tests against postgres stuff by creating a transaction and rolling back. This is getting harder and harder, particularly if you have more than one service. I wonder what people do nowadays for tests to run efficiently and concurrently.

Food for thought that throwing out a component is cheaper and more economical than doing a bit of engineering (eg measuring out a problem with a panel and fixing it - in my case, it was likely a contact issue somewhere) It feels like such a wasteful approach... even though I get why it's more economical like this.

@SamtheNightOwl @duns_sc0tus The weirdest thing about “the discourse” on “they” is that nearly 30 years ago i was taught as a small child to use “they” in single pronoun indeterminate cases yet I’ve seen so much discourse acting like this is some obscure trick and not just a built-in alternative to “he/she”

Interesting thing about English rarely discussed: there is exactly one circumstance where using an inanimate pronoun for a human is socially acceptable (and indeed mandatory), an infant or unborn child of indeterminate gender.

@patio11 @DKThomp Feels like it also fails the basic test of “if the airline no longer offered flights then what happens.” People want the points to get flights! See also “what if Google no longer offered search”. Test ain’t perfect tho. What if Heroku stopped paying its electricity bills…

@DKThomp This is a fairly common description but I don’t think it is accurate. Consider an airline with material international operations, charging single digit percentage points of flights in JPY. “It loses money on Americans; good thing it has the Japan business to keep it afloat.”

I think a fun running series would be something like: What's that business's actual "business"? EG: Airlines don't make money by flying ppl around. The profits come from credit cards. What are other industries whose profit center would surprise most people?
