A special session at Mobile Security Conclave 2026 on Manipulated Minds: How Cybercriminals Exploit Human Psychology was delivered by @ukv_murthy , Vice President, Data Security Council of India.
The session examined how cyber scams have evolved from isolated fraudulent attempts into highly sophisticated attack models, with cybercriminals becoming increasingly organised, skilled, and adaptive in their methods. It highlighted how cybercrime now functions like an ecosystem or industry, where specialised actors collaborate across different stages of attack execution, distribution, and monetisation.
A major focus was on the psychological strategies leveraged by threat actors, such as fear and urgency, authority bias, greed and perceived opportunity, curiosity, temptation, and cognitive overload etc, deliberately used to manipulate decision-making and lower user vigilance.
The discussion also reflected on current cybercrime trends, showing that as attack techniques become more refined, understanding human psychology remains central to strengthening cyber awareness and resilience.
He also highlighted India’s cyber fraud response architecture, the importance of citizen reporting, and the role of real-time intervention mechanisms in improving fraud response and limiting financial harm.
