Trump makes a joke about taking anxiety drugs here saying “I don’t have time to be depressed.” There’s actually a lot of wisdom in that. Anxiety/depression can often be a symptom of inaction/lack of purpose. When you’re busy moving, it can burn off.

The books you love are a window into your personality. •Mystery & self-improvement attract conscientious people •Sci-fi, psychology, philosophy draw open-minded people •Memoir & horror appeal to neurotic people Reading doesn't just shape our views. It reveals what we're like.

The benefits of reading a book instead of phone scrolling: feeling energized instead of mentally fried. Phone scrolling = tiring Book reading = energizing The next time you have a 10 minute break between commitments, pick up a book and read. You may be surprised to discover that those 10 minutes actually energize your mind rather than leaving you mentally drained.

I think Dr. Alok’s prediction that “in 60 years, we will look back on AI like we look back on tobacco/nicotine” is wrong. AI has massive potential upside for mental health outcomes. We hear the occasional story of AI helping somebody to harm themselves or another person. But we don’t hear the thousands if not, millions of stories of AI helping somebody to improve themselves or help another person. This is the negativity bias. It’s safe to ignore a sunset, but not a tsunami.

While deep in the development of the iPod, Steve Jobs found himself bridging two seemingly opposite worlds: the cold precision of technology and the raw soul of music. In that intersection, he arrived at a profound insight—one you might know firsthand through creating art or building rockets. Art demands discipline. Technology demands creativity and intuition. The realization struck him because the technologists he worked with dismissed artists as lazy dreamers lounging on couches, while the artists viewed engineers as rigid, hard-headed machines. But Jobs, who lived in both realms through Pixar and Apple, saw the truth was exactly the reverse. The artists were the disciplined ones—endlessly refining, iterating, and pushing past resistance until the work rang true. The technologists, meanwhile, were the intuitive, almost mystical creators, guided by leaps of imagination that no flowchart could ever capture. @WalterIsaacson

The Charlie Curran interview exposed one of the problems with Hollywood today: the people in charge don't even watch movies. They’re so detached from the audience that they think they can replace good storytelling with "woke" pandering. The result? Cringe, unwatchable content. If Hollywood wants to save itself, they need to stop lecturing and start actually watching some films.

I remember sitting in an accounting class during my sophomore year when the professor started talking about career paths. He walked to the whiteboard, drew a line down the middle, and wrote Investment Banking on one side and In-N-Out on the other. Then he wrote out the average salary of an investment banker and compared it to the pay of an hourly In-N-Out employee. After that, he pointed out that investment bankers often work around 80 hours a week. His point was: when you break it down by hours worked, the pay of an investment banker is not all that different from working 80 hours a week at In-N-Out

This isn’t just a $META issue. It’s increasingly an issue for all of Tech. Because even within Tech, there is an emerging divide between AI-superpowered engineer/PM/sales folks and everyone else. And we know how that will end: Smaller orgs, bigger payoffs but then the riches distributed across even fewer players that it is today. And everyone sees it coming. Hence the rot from the outside and, now, the inside. To my peers and to the super entrepreneurs who are far more successful than me: This is why elites in tech that “have made it” are increasingly the ones that EVERYONE hates. We’ve not distinguished the difference between luck and skill that got us here. We don’t act as stewards in the broadest sense of the term. We aren’t bringing society along like other generations of super successful business people have. We don’t pay it forward in any meaningful way - although we have clever ways to make it look like we do. Mostly, people see us hording all the gains. Modern technology companies have essentially created a new form of indentured servitude for the educated masses where SBC was used to pay you an incredible living wage so you don’t go work “for the other guy”. But what does it mean to make $500k/yr if you still leak 55% to taxes then your landlord takes the next 25% for rent?? You still can’t buy a house in SV. These folks are on an eternal hamster wheel. It turns out it’s not much different than being in middle America making $55k.

We have reached an era where some people have not touched a steering wheel and have simply let their cars drive them around for a whole year, whereas others do not know this is possible at all.

The comments here are eye opening. You’ve got one group of people posting screenshots of 98–99%+ autonomous miles, saying things like “I don’t remember what it feels like to actually drive.” They are living in the future: commuting, running errands, or road-tripping while they read, work, nap, or just zone out. Their car is basically a personal robotaxi that’s getting better every week. Time is the ultimate currency. The average American drives about 293 hours a year. At 95%+ FSD utilization (which thousands of owners are now reporting with v14.x), that’s ~278 hours reclaimed—the equivalent of 11+ extra days of life every single year.

I appreciate this analogy for capitalism. It's one of the clearest ways to cut through the zero-sum thinking that dominates so much political chatter. SpaceX turning a marshy patch of Texas coastline into the largest rocket factory on Earth isn’t “redistributing” anything. It is "baking more pies"

@davidsenra @tobi Every time I listen to Bernie Sanders, I think of the pie. He is worried about slicing the pie and distributing the crumbs to everyone. I always ask, why not just bake 10 more pies? Abundance means not having to slice the pie, but instead, share or give away what you can’t eat.

"Capitalism created the possibility of the win win win. It used to be a zero sum game where somebody won, somebody else lost. The biggest mistake people make, intellectuals in particular, they still think we're in a zero sum world. They're obsessed with some billionaires because Bernie Sanders thinks that Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk somehow stole the money from the people. They don't understand that it's this prosperity machine that's creating more, not just for those billionaires, but for everything that they're touching. They're creating value for their customers, they're creating value for their employees. Their suppliers are flourishing, their investors are seeing their capital go up. It can be reinvested and compound. All philanthropy ultimately comes from business. That's where the profits are. Where does all the taxes come from? It ultimately comes from business as well. This is the engine that's lifting humanity out. The entrepreneurs are the drivers of that engine. Somebody like Elon Musk, he gets a very, very, very tiny sliver of the value that he creates for the whole world." — @iamjohnmackey
