lol we actually do know where it goes. The California State Controller publishes annual reports on SB 1 revenue, and Caltrans publishes project-level breakdowns. Roughly half goes to state highway maintenance and rehabilitation, a quarter goes to local streets and roads distributed to cities and counties by formula, and the rest funds trade corridors, transit operations, and bridge programs. Every city and county that receives these funds files annual project lists that are public record. You can literally look up your own city’s SB 1 project list on the California Transportation Commission website right now. The data isn’t hidden. It’s online. “Nobody knows where it goes” is only true if nobody bothers to look. The audit you’d want already exists. It gets published every year.

When I’m governor the gas tax is gone. California doesn’t need a gas tax to fund roads, it needs to cut the waste, fraud and abuse. We have terrible roads and high gas taxes. Make that make sense.

California’s gas tax brings in roughly $9 billion a year and is constitutionally restricted to road and transit funding under SB 1. Eliminate it and you have to either find $9 billion elsewhere or watch the roads get even worse than the ones you’re already complaining about. “Cut waste fraud and abuse” is the magic phrase every politician uses when they don’t want to name a real funding source, because actual line-item cuts are unpopular and specific. Name them. Which programs go? Which agencies shrink? How much do you actually save? I’ll wait…

I’ve spent a decade telling people to do what I do: "Buy and Hold." Now I've decided to list my entire real estate portfolio for sale and walk away. It started slow. The bills, the maintenance, the tax increases... but the final straw was when I tried to develop an ADU to do exactly what the city of LA claims it wants investors like me to do: Create more housing. The reality of 2026 finally stripped the emotion away. My LA rentals are netting about 4-5% after the constant background noise of taxes, insurance spikes, and repairs. Meanwhile, a risk-free Treasury pays 5%. The trade-off just doesn't make sense any more. I’m reallocating to a liquid portfolio that actually lets me focus on the work I love.
