It is 5pm on a Monday, and a Premier League game was just played at Stamford Bridge. That is not a mistake. There is a very specific reason it is happening. Chelsea hosted and lost to Nottingham Forest today, and the scheduling is a direct consequence of two things colliding at once: European football and a bank holiday. Forest beat Aston Villa 1-0 in the Europa League semi-final first leg last Thursday, making the original Saturday fixture impossible with less than 48 hours recovery time. The Premier League needed to move the game. Sunday was too tight but monday was the bank holiday, and that changed everything for them. The Early May Bank Holiday always falls on the first Monday of every May. The Premier League have only used that window eight times in their entire history. Today was the ninth. It is that rare. Why today tho? And why 3pm? The earlier kick-off in my opinion, protects Forest, who are unbeaten in nine games across all competitions, ahead of the decisive second leg at Villa Park on Thursday because every hour of recovery matters at this stage of a European campaign. The Premier League ordinarily avoids weekday afternoon kick-offs to protect working fans. Bank holidays are one of the very few exceptions. The FA cannot let him get away with that. This will be a missed opportunity if they don’t take action against Arsenal and Martinelli. There has been too many incidents in football where refs are pushed or shoved and football cannot let it escalate any more. I would have loved to see the ref send him off.
