Canadian rocket engineers are a rare breed. Wired to beat all odds, tough as nails, and keeping the flame of our nation’s ingenuity, grit and spirit alive and well. Here’s a behind the scenes look at a typical day at NordSpace’s test range. Powering through freezing temperatures and blizzards, day and night, fending off moose and bears, all in an effort to build Canada’s first ever sovereign space launch capability. With many new technical advancements around the bend, our first suborbital launch coming up, breaking ground on Spaceport Canada, regulatory and launch licensing progress, the Canadian Space Launch Conference in Ottawa this April, and so much more - every single moment counts for NordSpace and Canada to get to orbit. Unsurprisingly, we’ve got a lot of catching up to do as a nation. New Zealand, Australia, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Germany, Norway, Scotland, United Kingdom, and many others are far ahead of Canada with space launch. Canada is highly capable and ready, but there’s no time to lose. Breaking! 🚀 🇨🇦 NordSpace successfully tested its fully integrated sub-orbital rocket, Taiga, powered by its proprietary and in-house 3D printed Hadfield engines and pressure vessels. This marks a significant step forward in preparation for Canada’s first commercial space launch. Taiga is the only commercial liquid rocket being developed in Canada, and is expected to launch later this year from our own spaceport, Spaceport Canada. Canada finds itself at a critical juncture with its sovereignty in space at stake. Our successful integrated rocket test is a major leap forward, and we are already in the advanced phases of completing the flight-ready version of Taiga. NordSpace was founded in 2022, and in a short time period has rapidly developed significant rocket technologies, launch and test infrastructure, and advanced manufacturing capabilities. NordSpace's CEO and founder, Rahul Goel, said “This successful test is not only a testament to our team and nation’s unmatched technical capabilities, but also our resilience and sheer determination. We had the opportunity to demonstrate Canada's commitment to world class space innovation, manufacturing, and the development of key industrial capabilities in space. We performed a live demonstration of our Zephyr satellite thruster, displayed our additive manufacturing research and development as well as our Taiga sub-orbital launch vehicle, and outlined upcoming developments for Spaceport Canada and our space systems division. NordSpace had a blast at SpaceBound 2024! It was exhilarating to feel the optimism and growing appreciation for the role commercial space will play in the Canadian space economy, and the importance of building building critical sovereign capabilities. Our CEO Rahul Goel shared NordSpace’s progress and vision for Canada on stage, and caught up with everyone from Minsiters, Astronauts, and Presidents/CEOs to friends and colleagues across government, academia and industry. Taiga is vertical! 🚀🇨🇦 NordSpace’s latest accomplishment is a major step towards our first launch attempt, coming soon! It was a moment of immense pride, relief and awe for our team to see our launch vehicle tower above us at its full scale for the first time, and witness Canadian history in the making. Sovereign space launch is a key industrial capability that Canada must have. From protecting our environment and securing our national interests, to creating jobs and prosperity, maintaining our sovereignty, and inspiring generations of young Canadians - we consider our commitment at NordSpace to building Canada’s future in space both our privilege and our duty. Over the next few days, we will be working to prepare for our first fully integrated vertical hotfire, which is sure to be a spectacle like none other! We’re also proud to share our new massive property, owned and operated by NordSpace, called the Canadian Space Research Range. Over the coming years we intend to develop it into a multi-use fully equipped test facility for space propulsion, robotics, and habitation research and open it to third parties (especially students) to safely test their technologies. Never has a launch program of this kind, at this scale, or at this pace ever been attempted in Canada. Our team went from literal napkin sketches to firing a flight-ready in-house manufactured engine in 8 months, and only 6 months after that designed and built our first launch vehicle. This investment and project is being developed to support NordSpace's Tundra launch vehicle and bring Canada one major step closer to sovereign launch as the nation's first operational spaceport.
