It's a semi-regular phenomenon that Europeans fly to the Yukon, walk into the woods and are never seen again. They figure there will eventually be some village where they can stock up on supplies, but the only points on their map are temporary camps that have been abandoned since the Gold Rush.

Every few months or so, a post like this makes the rounds and you see the same types of posts There’s plenty of reasons a nurse may ask a parent to leave the room, and as a child and adolescent psychiatrist, plenty of reasons I may ask the same Any suspicion of abuse is the obvious, and data has shown this unequivocally over and over that parents/guardians are the most likely perpetrators of that Asking sensitive questions re: sexuality and or gender identity, as well as sexual activity is another obvious one; personally, I will try to ask with parents in room as I believe in communication and honesty, but it is the most common reason a kid would ask the parent to step out of the room for a bit Along with this, substance use and/or misuse round out the obvious ones With a bit more nuance, the vibes are just off with a parent in the room and I get a sense that the kid just isn’t being fully truthful; ask the parent to leave for a bit, and a whole new kid reveals themselves in the office Another reason is that there is just a lot of emotion between the family members in the room, parent putting the kid down repeatedly, tons of arguing, even potential aggression both ways, and overall not helpful with having a parent or child in the room at the same time and need to separate them I try to have the parents in the room as much as possible, but I ultimately leave it up to the kid who stays there, which includes myself and/or my resident, as I want to encourage patient autonomy, even to my 5 and 6 year old patients: you control who and what with your body and health And that all goes into my speech on day one of working with a patient before I even ask them what brings them in So if healthcare professional wants to talk to your child alone, there’s probably a good reason for it I would hope they would be able to communicate that to all involved

I took my 11 year old to her checkup this morning and the nurse asked me to step out of the room for a moment. I politely declined and she said, "It's just for a moment." And I told her, "No thank you, given all the stories about children being abused my husband and I decided to never leave our children alone with anyone, even medical providers. Anything you need to do or say you can do with me in the room." She looked all miffed and just left, no idea what her plan was but she didn't feel the need to continue it with me present and that makes me even more suspicious?? When she left my daughter thanked me for not leaving, she's already shy about the doctor, her eyes got so wide when the lady asked me to leave.

@sulmoney Took a child to the ER with bad facial cuts after a bike accident. Later he said “They must not have been listening to my dad when he told them what happened, because when you were all gone they asked me again.” We understood exactly why he was asked again and were glad they did.

@jasonc_nc For weeks or even months with a new mom to help out (even with “non-working” new moms) which would be a huge help for most new parents. But I don’t ever recall and haven’t heard of it being typical for grandparents to watch grandkids 40 hours/week on an ongoing basis? 4/4

@jasonc_nc And women in Silent Generation before that often never worked again after marriage and/or children. So when did grandparents frequently watch grandkids on a regular daily basis? I do remember that it was very common for non-working moms or sisters to come stay …. 3/?

I’ve yet to see real data but anecdotally it seems boomer grandparents are largely disinterested in being childcare providers, in a departure from the past. Makes me think that’s also why childcare has become such an urgent discussion. A formerly broad labor supply vanished.

Genuinely curious—why don’t more people use their own parents/kid’s grandparents for childcare as opposed to daycare/preschool/nannies (which seem more common)? Is it common for boomer grandparents to show disinterest in their grandchildren?

There is this strange phenomena where people new to cybersecurity go way overboard trying to look cool and badass to give the facade of being really technical. I'll tell you something right now. You probably won't like to hear it, but it is important. Nobody cares about: - Your certificates - The conferences you've attended - Your vendor swag - What OS you're using - How many LED's your computer has Here is what your peers admire the most: - If you're polite - If you're willing to admit if you're wrong - If you're easy to get along with If you're just a chill nerd who is nice, easy going, willing to admit when you're wrong, you will go further than the big mean nerd with the galaxy brain

@footprintsfh @ls_freda @DisaffectedPod Years ago while preparing for my son’s goldfish’s funeral/burial, Goldie was carefully laid out in her paper box casket, lined with blue tissue paper - but we realized the cats were displaying an unseemly interest so Goldie had to temporarily go in the fridge for safety. 🤣

Please, I urge you to follow this protocol if you can when your pet needs euthanasia. It's what I've done for 20 years. 1. Call a house-call vet. Hold kitty/doggy when they're put to sleep. This is your moral duty. You must not ever leave them in a sterile room without you at the vet. 2. Put the body out on a blanket so that the other animals understand where their friend went. They know what death is-if you *let them*. Don't make them think he abandoned them and ran away. 3. Wrap the body in a sheet from home, and dig the grave yourself if you have a yard. Bury your own dead. -J

He has bravely served in the U.S. Army Reserves since 2023 as an Information Technologies Specialist and had an incredibly bright future ahead of him. In moments like these, we must all come together to show much-needed love and compassion for the Coady family through this incredibly difficult time.

@RadioFreeTom Are you kidding? The Cold War was absolutely formative for Gen X. Gen X’ers were 11 to 26 years old when it ended. I remember sobbing at 9 learning that everyone could die in a nuclear war.
