@PeterMoskos Agreeing with the 10,000 figure is one of those things you have to do to be accepted on the left. Dispute it at your social peril.

Lies are not a left / right thing. But man-oh-man in bugs the hell out of me when people just make shit up, and nobody cares. Nobody holds them accountable. I want her to live forever because I'm just picturing the glorious lauditory obits for her and Angela Davis and the likes.

@joelgombiner @ramez Yeah, people are so eager to point out its mistakes, but they ignore that doctors are wrong all the time, too. I've been misdiagnosed 3 out of the 4 times I've been to an orthopedist.

I can't imagine managing my own health and not using an LLM at this point.
Joel Selanikio@jselanikio

A Columbia ER doc wrote in @nytimes that she typed her own lab results into ChatGPT and got better care than her own doctor gave her — availability, patience, and truly customized diet and exercise steps (not just a generic handout). Her doctor's response to the labs was "book another appointment to discuss." I have to say I've asked patients many times to do just that. But ChatGPT was available immediately, not in two weeks or a month. It asked about her day, analyzed the ingredients in her vitamin gummies, and came up with a customized plan right away. For free. When I talk about tech making healthcare better and smaller, this isn't the better part. It's the smaller part — while patients (even patients that are doctors) getting better care than healthcare can provide. buff.ly/8fWpMrL #DigitalHealth #AIinHealthcare #FutureOfMedicine #healthcareAI

@joelgombiner @ramez ChatGPT chastised me over my glucose level and motivated me to make some changes. My doctor didn't even notice the lab report value. Same with vitamin D levels.

It's like blaming the handicapped for not getting the prime parking space at the mall. If the empty spaces reserved for the handicapped didn't exist, you wouldn't be parking there. They'd be occupied!
Nicole@nicolegelinas

The three lanes of cars are the problem here, not the one lane of bikes. If the fourth lane wasn’t for bikes, it would also be filled with gridlocked cars. Likewise, if you gave both sidewalks to the cars as much of America has done, they would fill quickly with … cars.

@ostap @mungowitz The customers *always* pay, it's just the method of collection that changes.

@mungowitz Stupid people openly boasting that they're underpaying their waiters and shaming their customers into paying extra fees should, morally, lose money. And most likely they will.

@mungowitz The average person doesn't know much about the economics of running a business. The only way restaurant owners can afford to pay living wages is to roll the cost into the prices, just like every other business does. Still, this sign is pretty snotty.

@EricMMrozek @Noahpinion Because most voters don’t think like this. They just vote for their team, based on cultural tradition or vibes. Very few people grasp policy or ideology.

Rightists really believe that deep down, the American people think like they do. No, you dorks, they don't. No matter how you ask the question, Americans say that America is a CREDAL nation, not a RACIAL or RELIGIOUS nation.

@Noahpinion This is a rigged question. Chris Rufo never talks about "The Character of the Anglo-Saxon People." Rufo is Italian, and, like most Italian-Americans he would probably disagree with that statement. But most Italians are Republicans who favor strong restrictions on immigration.

@HistoryBoomer If you brought this up to left-leaning audiences in 2020, you'd have been eaten alive. Getting a realistic handle on the problem is closet fascism.

@rpondiscio This would have happened with or without Musk, but he was uniquely qualified to get Trump elected and undermine our system of government, so your praise is short-sighted.

@botzarelli @tombennett71 He knows she was joking, but he also knows that people tell truths when they make jokes. This child doesn't have hobbies outside of social media. He understand kids--and people--better than everyone telling him it was a joke.

@tombennett71 I think she was joking and had already demonstrated with her clear and articulate comments that she was not held back by having had a lot of screen time.

@ShakinthatChalk @JayKloppenberg It beggars belief that you think Bennett didn't recognize sarcasm. He's just wise enough to know that people often express real attitudes in the jokes they tell.

@JayKloppenberg Farcical isn’t it? She’s incredibly intelligent and that comment was sarcasm. The adults that don’t see that beggars belief.

@JayKloppenberg He knows she was making a joke, but the jokes people tell often are informative. It does suggest this child is lacking in hobbies outside of social media, which is sad. @tombennett71

@JayKloppenberg I don't think Hirsch argues that "classics" are necessary to thrive, but cultural literacy in general, which includes far more than the classics. But classics are *part* of that and many want to dump them to promote works from marginalized authors. Wrong educational goal.

I am actually far more sympathetic to Hirsch's idea of Cultural Literacy than many, I think. I do believe there is value in a shared set of reference points, as well as intrinsic value to tried and true classics. But it is absolutely not true that these classics are "necessary to thrive." That is mixing up educational goals
Colby Lyons@ImColbyLyons

In the preface to Hirsch's "Cultural Literacy," he claims that cultural literacy is necessary to thrive in the modern world and that it's essential to "escape poverty." Hirsch also claims that schools aren't teaching this. So, are we to conclude that nobody is thriving?
