Elderly woman scammed out of her life savings by crypto fraudsters who used WhatsApp to gain her trust and steal almost $300,000 from her over a few months. They first started messaging her in 2024. The victim’s name is Kyle Holder. She is 73. Assuming her story is true and the CBS News reporting is accurate, this enrages me. I’m impressed she has found a way to navigate this and persevere. Holder was hospitalized from the emotional trauma. She now lives in a single room that she shares with a roommate in an assisted living facility. Her case was referred to the IRS Criminal Investigation New York Field Office, where special agents mapped out the scam. They said the perpetrators stole millions and she was just one of their victims. None of the perpetrators have been caught yet. The IRS Criminal Division is seeking tips, so if you think you are a victim of this kind of fraud, reach out. The government can make justice by doing things criminals can’t do. Even when things seem hopeless. Thousands of Americans were swindled out of a combined estimated $20 billion in cyber theft in 2025. Holder is now living off Medicaid, which means the American people are paying the price for her getting robbed. Holder is a victim and she is brave for sharing her story publicly like this. Many people would be too embarrassed to show their face, but not her. Any of us could become victims, no matter how careful we are. So it is incumbent on us to do what we can to make fraudsters pay the maximum the law allows. Getting old can be challenging enough without people trying to rob you.
