On June 19, 1865, African American communities in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom from slavery — two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect. For 161 years, Juneteenth has been a day of remembrance for the freedom that was delayed. It is also a celebration of the joy and resilience that flourished despite that delay. The contributions of African Americans, whose struggle for freedom shaped our nation, are immeasurable. Yet too many Black families continue to bear the brunt of an affordability crisis that has pushed them out of the neighborhoods and communities they've built. True freedom has a tangible impact on daily life: the ability to afford housing, earn a living wage, put food on the table, support a family, and create a future for generations to come. As we celebrate today, we must recommit ourselves to ensuring this freedom is fully realized. Happy Juneteenth, New York City.

We were honored to co-sponsor yesterday’s Jewish & Muslim solidarity rally and canvas for @bradlander. It was thrilling to join our partners, community leaders (including @NYCMayor), and HUNDREDS of neighbors to support Brad and our shared vision of a thriving future for all.

This is what Jewish & Muslim solidarity looks like. Neighbors coming together around a vision of shared safety, dignity & peace. In NYC. In DC. In Israel & Palestine, and across the world. We're united around a belief that a better world is possible — one in which we don’t compromise on anyone’s humanity. One in which we are not complicit in occupation & genocide. One in which everyone has a home they can afford, with no bombs falling on it, in a place where they are both safe and free. New footage obtained by B’Tselem uncovers the moments when the Abu Haikal family was shot. Seven-month-old Sam Abu Haikal was killed in the shooting, and both his parents were injured. The footage clearly shows that the Israeli soldier fired at the car as it was slowing to a stop. The car was far from the soldiers and posed no danger to them whatsoever. Moments later, in another video obtained by B’Tselem, seven-month-old Sam’s father, Fahed, is seen just after his son was shot. Fahed is holding baby Sam in his arms, trying to stop the bleeding from his head with his hands, while Sam’s mother, Daniyah, who was also injured by the gunfire while holding her son, is seen sitting on the ground, next to the car. Last Friday, 5 June, an Israeli soldier fired at a Palestinian family driving home from a family visit, as they sat in their car in the Tel Rumeidah neighborhood in Hebron. The family was shot as the car was slowing to a stop at the soldier’s command. Sam, a seven‑month‑old baby who was in his mother’s arms in the back seat, was struck in the head and pronounced dead shortly afterward. Sam’s parents were also injured by the gunfire; his mother is still in the hospital. After the shooting, the soldier who fired and another soldier who was with him left the scene without checking the car or offering any assistance to the critically wounded baby or to his mother. In the past two and a half years, Israel has killed tens of thousands of children in Gaza and the West Bank. The immunity it gets from the international community has led to a reality where, under Israeli rule, Palestinian lives are entirely disposable – even a seven‑month‑old baby.

Systematic violence and human rights violations are not exceptions to Israel's apartheid regime and occupation, they are integral to it. Israel is using unbridled violence in all the territories under its control, as well as in Lebanon and Iran. Since October 2023, this policy has escalated: In Gaza: tens of thousands of Palestinians killed, millions forcibly displaced, entire neighborhoods and infrastructure systematically destroyed In the West Bank: about 1,082 Palestinians killed, including 239 children and teenagers; 61 communities with at least 4,161 members forcibly displaced and another 15 partially so, with at least 454 members displaced In Israeli prisons: thousands of Palestinians subjected to systemic torture, violence and humiliation, in inhumane conditions Under Israel's apartheid regime, Palestinian lives are treated as expendable and millions across the Middle East are at risk.

Our political and communal leaders must stop equating the Jewish community with the genocidal government of Israel. It is antisemitic, and it puts us all in grave danger. (4/4)

It is shameful that establishment Jewish institutional leaders like the ADL’s Jonathan Greenblatt promoted this event as a celebration of Jewish culture, when in reality it served to platform war criminals. And it is misleading and dangerous to claim that Mayor Mamdani’s decision not to attend signals a lack of support for Jewish New Yorkers. (3/4)

We are appalled that U.S. politicians and Jewish communal institutions marched alongside war criminal Bezalel Smotrich, other fascist Israeli leaders, and pro-apartheid organizations like the Hebron Fund at Sunday’s Israel Day parade in New York.  (1/4)
