Social media 2.0 won’t be about likes or views—it’ll be building real connections with others. Talked to @jayshetty about how the next generation of consumer social will be about connecting with your *actual* friends. (s/o @airbudswidget) The future I’m working on is one my daughters deserve: authentic, human, and meaningful.

@NWischoff Tried to build this with @my_villy and learned a TON about both parent and sitter psychology. It’s pretty complicated and also varies on type of need (one of/emergency sitter vs regular nanny-type care). I tried to focus on the former. Would love to try again with partners.

@turtledumplin This is the exact sentiment of all the “held my nose and noted Trump” people I know. It wasn’t about who they agreed with more, rather who they feared more

Our side lost because of the intolerance of the tolerant left. If you don’t see that, then we will keep losing. People didn’t vote for Trump, they voted against you. They voted against your “if you don’t agree with me then you’re my enemy” mentality. They voted against your need to have an echo chamber or risk being canceled. They voted against being attacked for a difference in opinion. They voted against being called pedos, racists, homophobes, Nazis simply for disagreeing with you. They voted for the right to keep YOU out of decisions for their children. They voted against having to walk on eggshells for fear of offending someone. I don’t care who I piss off by saying this, step out of the tunnel vision and have a civil conversation with folks and take responsibility for your part in pushing people, who are on the fence, to vote against you.

@suffiyanmalikk @sabakarimm Yes! While hilarious it’s not grounding. The worst part is trying to dovetail a meme into a convo which either gets ignored or simply reacted to.

@sabakarimm I’m doing this weird thing where I delete Instagram weekly and try to only use it on the weekends. The primary use case is checking memes from friends and sharing memes with friends There’s hardly any conversation - maybe it’s just me

I recently ran an experiment where I created a new IG account and only followed my closest friends… and the results were eye opening. Some background: 1. Most people follow an average of 550 people. I follow 805. 2. Dunbars number states people can’t maintain more than 150 meaningful connections. For this reason, I followed 54 people. 54 people who I would grab coffee with if they were in town, I would comfortably pick up my phone and call any day of the week, or I could post my last raw unedited 10 photos from camera roll without feeling anxious. So why does my main account follow 805 people? Well, that’s exactly the issue. It’s because these platforms make money based on time in spent in-app, so they want you to scrolling and swiping as long as possible. Part I is self inflicting. Having an account since 2012 means 65 new follows every year, and it’s not really intuitive to unfollow people you haven’t interacted with in 2-3 or even 10 years. So it stacks up. Also worth mentioning some of the brands and musicians I like are peppered in there too. Part II is on them. I entirely agree with @seanrad that follower based economy was much healthier. The new age platforms don’t want you to only follow your close friends. Even with my new account, when I first open the app, I’m being forced to review an infinite number of people to add. At first it was suggestions of people I knew, but I’ve ignored so many to hide this banner it’s showing randoms now. And I can’t get rid of the invasive banner. It shows up every time. This is why I agree it’s in violation of free will, because the first content you see (under the suggestions to add) is more suggestions of more random content. Why? Why can’t it just be the content of the 54 people I followed? They don’t want me to only have 54 friends because if I’m the average user, my friends don’t post enough daily - for me to doom-scroll in the app. This is why all four tabs (minus the new post button) default to explore/suggestions/algorithms. They make it hard as possible to see my friends content that they want to suck me into adding more people, and watching random (albeit sometimes interesting) videos, while it takes me two taps to see actual friends posts only — which is a button most people don’t even know about, and they hide half the time. If updates were readily available you’d hop in and out within 2-3 minutes and get back to touching grass or enjoying the view of wherever you are, but they don’t want that. Change is for sure needed. And I don’t think it only applies to children @mignano. People of all ages are feeling lonely. Suicide rates are higher than ever. Toxic masculinity all over these platforms is fueling violence and aggression in schools and communities, leaving people more disconnected and worsening the mental health crisis. I don’t see it getting better. They say they’re for close friends but they’re really not. Like @bonatsos said, the soil is fertile and this is why we’re launching Favs next month - the quickest way to see what people you care about are up to, without all the noise. Aside from us, there’s a bunch of founders working on incredible products giving choice to users. That’s what I’m excited for. Happy to send them your way, @harrystebbings

Does social media now violate free will? 📵 @seanrad “Social media platforms are to some extent violating my free will by algorithmically picking what content I see. When social media was a follower based economy it was a lot healthier of an ecosystem. With this move to an algorithm based economy we are slowly sacrificing free will.” Love your thoughts on this @mignano @bonatsos

I had a 130lb Cane Corso. Raised him from a puppy—expensive dog with champion bloodline, professionally trained for two months on site, amazing temperament and awesome companion to my toddlers. When he was 4, I went to lay with him on the floor and pet him, he bit me in the face and stood over me with this hair sticking up growling at me. I got up slowly and he started tracking me around the house. Last time I'll own a dog that could easily kill me.

I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna cannonball into the pit bull debate. My feelings on dogs are that you shouldn’t own one that you’re incapable of instantly neutralizing. Too many people own dogs they aren’t capable of neutralizing. When I see them in public, I get far away fast.

@AmandaMGoetz And for whatever it’s worth. I’ve worked in tech for a while now (mostly fully remote companies). There’s no app or PO initiative that creates team connections like irl does. And I have a coworking space, but it’s not the same as people you actually work with.

@AmandaMGoetz I miss it a lot. I love the flexibility I have now, but like most things what’s comfortable isn’t always what’s best. I think teams work better irl. A schedule from an outside force is helpful. And separation of home and work is great. Hybrid would be perfect.

I don’t know if all types of startups are the same but I feel like Consumer-Social folks come together and support each other more than anyone else. I’ve DM’d a bunch, a bunch have DM’d me, and we always get on a call or meet up and pledge to help each other out if we ever need. It’s definitely collaboration more than competition.

@shriyanevatia Also, if he has a strong regulatory background create target companies/industries and start networking into them. If strong litigation background try to narrow it to which industry the experience is in and again target those companies. (I’ve been in-house for 15yrs happy to chat)

@shriyanevatia Transitioning to a more established tech company will help before trying to get to early stage. Candidly he likely doesn’t have the in-house mindset an early stage company needs yet, so bigger company will be a good initial step. Goinhouse.com is helpful
