#TNIEexplainer | At 8.25 pm on April 6, inside a heavily shielded complex along Tamil Nadu’s coast, a quiet but defining moment unfolded in India’s nuclear journey. The 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at #Kalpakkam attained “first criticality”, the point at which a nuclear reactor sustains a controlled chain reaction on its own. There were no dramatic outward signs, no immediate surge of electricity into the grid, but in nuclear engineering terms, this was the instant the reactor came alive, a moment some scientists liken to an “Akshaya Patra” of energy, a system that, once stabilised, can keep producing more fuel than it consumes. In common parlance, the term “critical” often suggests danger, but in nuclear science it signifies stability. Criticality is achieved when each fission event releases enough neutrons to sustain exactly one more fission event, creating a steady, self-sustaining chain reaction. At this point, the reactor no longer depends on external inputs to keep the process going. It marks the transition from a constructed system to an operational one. 🔗newindianexpress.com/explainers/202… @Krish_TNIE #NuclearEnergy #India

With #TamilNadu heading towards a high-octane election season, public health experts have called for standard operating procedures (SOPs) for managing large public gatherings during the summer, warning that heat exposure could pose serious risks to voters and political workers. Former WHO chief scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan said authorities must move beyond advisories and institutionalise heat safety protocols. She stressed on the need for detailed SOPs covering crowd management, medical preparedness, hydration and timing of events. Swaminathan also told #TNIE that she would write to the National Disaster Management Authority and the State Disaster Management Authority urging close monitoring during the election period, particularly since #TamilNadu has already declared heat as a state disaster. @Krish_TNIE Read more here: newindianexpress.com/states/tamil-n…

Braving the waters that feed their families, fishing communities from 16 coastal villages have risen in protest against the proposed #MamallanReservoir project, warning that submerging over 4,300 acres of the Great Salt Lake wetlands will destroy livelihoods, rich biodiversity, and a fragile backwater ecosystem that cannot be recreated. @AntoJoseph @Krish_TNIE @NewIndianXpress Watch the video here👇 youtu.be/kiaCiTvKsnk

#MamallanReservoir project | Fishing communities from 16 coastal villages protest plans for the massive reservoir that could submerge over 4,300 acres of marshes, mudflats, salt pans and backwaters, including large parts of the Great Salt Lake ecosystem. Reservoir will submerge large swathes of Great Salt Lake ecosystem; it’s our workplace not empty land, say fishers. @Krish_TNIE Read more here: newindianexpress.com/cities/chennai…

#TamilNadu government has notified comprehensive guidelines to regulate joyrides and commercial use of horses, donkeys and mules across the State. The move comes against the backdrop of growing concerns over animal cruelty, unsafe working conditions and lack of veterinary oversight in popular tourist locations. The guidelines, issued by N Subbaiyan, principal secretary of Animal Husbandry, Dairy, Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Department via G.O., bring joyrides involving equines under a formal licensing and monitoring framework aligned with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. According to the order, equines are commonly used for joyrides, transportation and ceremonial purposes in tourist hubs such as #Chennai, #Udhagamandalam and #Kodaikanal, as well as in hilly and rural areas. @Krish_TNIE Read more here: newindianexpress.com/states/tamil-n…

The abandonment of the India–South Africa T20 match amid thick smog on Wednesday has once again thrown a harsh spotlight on the worsening air pollution gripping large parts of north India, with real-time data and new studies pointing to a deeply entrenched winter pollution problem driven largely by local sources. Environmental experts say the episode is emblematic of a larger structural crisis. A recent early-winter assessment by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has found that pollution levels across Delhi-NCR and increasingly in neighbouring cities have risen to dangerously high levels, despite lower farm fire contributions this season. The problem is no longer confined to megacities alone. CSE's findings show that smaller towns across the wider airshed are witnessing longer and more intense smog episodes, often rivaling or exceeding pollution levels in Delhi. 🔗newindianexpress.com/web-only/2025/… ✍️ @Krish_TNIE

In one of India’s largest ecosystem restoration efforts, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department is reclaiming forests from invasive species and reviving habitats for wildlife to flourish. Already 34,710 hectares have been restored , including 26,735 ha of Lantana camara, 4,685 ha of Prosopis juliflora, 1,327 ha of Wattle, and 1,963 ha of Senna spectabilis. This strengthens native vegetation restoring the right of wild animals to roam freely. With the full removal of Senna spectabilis targeted this year, Tamil Nadu is moving decisively toward ecological renewal. The entire operation is tracked through a dedicated geo-tagged restoration dashboard, ensuring scientific precision at scale #ecosystemrestoration #invasiveremoval @Krish_TNIE @IndianExpress @tnforestdept

Couldn’t believe my eyes. Solio Ranch — or Solio Game Reserve — is one of #Kenya’s quiet conservation miracles. A privately owned sanctuary at the foothills of #MountKenya and the #Aberdares, it has evolved from a cattle ranch into one of Africa’s most successful #rhino breeding strongholds. The best part is we would see rhinos and giraffes from the road. Some sights stay with you. Solio is one of them. Thank you @UNEP & @GRIDArendal for making this happen. @NewIndianXpress

10 years have flown by just like that. From barely 5,000 followers, the FB page jumped to 75,000 by December 2nd. That was the moment I truly felt weather blogging could make a difference to the public. Reposting what I wrote at 11:30 pm on December 1st, 2015 that night changed everything. My inbox was flooded with messages “pls save me”, “help me”, “send me boat sir”. I had only a few hours of charge left in my laptop. For the first time in my life as a hardcore pluviophile, I wished for the rains to stop. And when I posted my final update at 3:30 am on December 2nd, saying the rains would end, I had never been so happy to see rainfall come to a halt. 10 years of journey with you all, was able to remember all those old followers by name itself, Good old days. Age is catching up these days. Hopefully and health permitting more blogging years to come. Thank you once again for all the love and trust !!!!

Cyclonic Storm Ditwah over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Sri Lanka continued to track north-northwestwards today, triggering a red alert for north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts. The system moved at about 8 kmph in the six hours ending 8.30 am and remained nearly stationary over the same region. As it tracks parallel to the coastline, Ditwah will come within 60 km of the Tamil Nadu coast by midnight, 50 km by early Sunday, and 25 km by Sunday evening. Models suggest the system may weaken and brush past the Chennai coast on Sunday evening as a Deep Depression. #CycloneDitwah @Krish_TNIE newindianexpress.com/states/tamil-n…

A new study has sounded the alarm on what scientists are calling a “new air pollutant” — inhalable microplastics. These are microscopic plastic fragments, less than 10 micrometres wide, small enough to slip deep into human lungs. While attention has long focused on fine dust such as PM2.5, researchers say its plastic equivalent — polymer dust — is now floating freely in the air we breathe. 🔗newindianexpress.com/nation/2025/No… ✍️ @Krish_TNIE
