Can’t believe it is March, and Chennai woke up to proper widespread thunderstorm rains overnight. March is usually one of the driest months for the city, with an average rainfall of around 3.5 mm, But places in South Chennai like Medavakkam and Pallikaranai has got close to 90 mm rains, which is extraordinary for this time of the year. In fact, starting from January, every month so far has turned out to be unusually active and good for us weather wise. Not just Chennai - Coimbatore, Bengaluru and many Interior regions have also seen strong thunderstorms in the last couple of days, with hailstorms reported in several places, something we don’t normally expect this early. The main reason behind this sudden activity is an unusually dipping westerly trough, which combined with strong ground heating has created instability across South and East India, triggering widespread thunderstorm development. Today also looks similar, with chances for thunderstorm rains over many Interior districts, especially during evening and night hours. After days of boring summer type weather with nothing much to track, this is a big welcome. What a storm it was early this morning! Some parts of South Chennai recorded close to a century truly remarkable for this time of the year. After days of dry and depressing weather, this spell has been a real treat for rain lovers. Gusts was nasty and touched 60 km/hr at some places. Last time Chennai got heavy rains in March 2008 when even school holidays were announced. 2023 March too we got surprise heavy rains in Chennai. Almost all districts across Tamil Nadu received rainfall over the last couple of days, and many places even witnessed hailstorms affecting farmers too. These intense storms are typically triggered by a kink in the jet stream, which creates strong instability and powerful updrafts, allowing hail to form. The rainfall data from the past two days (refer images 1 & 2) clearly shows how widespread and impactful this system has been. Today’s Rain Forecast (Image 3): ------------------------------- Districts likely to receive rainfall include: Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Salem, Dharmapuri, Trichy, Thanjavur, Madurai, Pudukottai, Sivagangai, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thenkasi, Theni, and Dindigul. So be happy with even light spells. Not only Chennai many other northern districts got their 1st spell of rains after a long gap.

After many days, at last rains are lashing many parts of Chennai city. It had been quite depressing without rain what a refreshing sight! Some places might missed today spells. But there are good chances for more showers tomorrow as well. Enjoy whatever spell you get.

Kink in the Jet Stream to bring Rains to Many Districts of Tamil Nadu till March 20. Today on 18th Many Interiors district will get Surprise thunderstorms. ======================= Jet streams are fast-flowing winds in the upper atmosphere. They are narrow, meandering air currents that move at very high speeds due to strong pressure differences. These winds occur near the top of the troposphere, around 12 km above the Earth’s surface (around the 200 hPa level). Sometimes the jet stream develops a “kink” or bend in its flow. When this happens, it can create upper level divergence, which encourages clouds to grow vertically and helps trigger rainfall below. Due to such a kink in the jet stream, several districts of Tamil Nadu are likely to receive rainfall until March 20. Rains Reported on 17th March ---------------------------- Many western districts in Tamil Nadu such as Erode, Tiruppur, Tenkasi, Coimbatore, Madurai, Theni, Nilgiris, Salem Reported isolated thunderstorms. Today 18th March ----------------- With a slight shift in the system, rains are likely across many interior districts of Tamil Nadu today. It is difficult to pinpoint any one specific district, as rainfall chances are spread across most of the interior belt. Districts from Krishnagiri – Salem – Trichy – Madurai corridor along with nearby districts such as Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Namakkal and Vellore have good chances of receiving rain. The Western Kongu districts including Coimbatore, Erode and the Nilgiris may also see showers. Similarly, the South districts such as Virudhunagar, Theni, Tenkasi, Madurai, Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi are likely to get rainfall. Some places might hailstorms which is common with the kink in Jet streams. Bangalore is expected to experience another rainy day, possibly even better than yesterday. Chennai and KTCC region, there is a surprise chance of early morning showers (19th) in isolated places, likely when most people are still asleep as it is close to the coast. These rains will also bring increased cloud cover and some welcome relief from the heat, especially across the interior districts.

This a rare, a very rare hailstorm event that blanketed fields and roads, painted like a snowfall. Unbelievable that this happened down south of India, in Dharward, Karnataka.
