Every week, we force a vote on the Senate floor to end the war in Iran. While there are signs Republicans are starting to break, so far we can't get to 50. But we will keep trying. Because the Iran war cost crisis is getting devastating for American families.

@RepMikeLevin MAYBE if you hadn’t campaigned, a minority candidate would have had a chance to represent their people. Instead, they got you. And that happened even before this SCOTUS ruling. Helped them not at all.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court's conservative majority did something that voting rights advocates have feared for years: they weakened Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, one of the last major pillars of 60 years of civil rights progress. Section 2 was how we ensured Black, Latino, and other minority communities had a real shot at electing representatives who reflect their priorities. Now, to challenge a discriminatory map, you have to prove intentional discrimination. That is an almost impossible bar to clear. The Congressional Black Caucus could lose 30% of its membership as a direct result. Within hours of the decision, Republicans in Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, and Mississippi are already having conversations about redrawing maps. Partisan gerrymandering was already out of control. This decision just took the guardrails off completely. We have to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and establish independent redistricting commissions nationwide, and we need to do it now.

Voter suppression is a way of life for Donald Trump and far right extremists on the Supreme Court. Republicans know they cannot win a free and fair election in November and so they are desperate to rig it. We will never let them succeed.

Jim Crow categorized people by race and assigned rights accordingly. Modern voting rights activism does the same thing with different beneficiaries. Both are collectivism. Third, gerrymandering is a problem created entirely by the system Obama wants to preserve: a political structure where the drawing of district lines determines outcomes. His solution is not to fix the structure. It is to ensure his side draws the lines. The government must treat every citizen equally before the law. Everyone should reject Obama's framing entirely. He is not defending individual rights. He is defending group power, while using the language of rights to make collectivism sound like liberty.

Democracy is literally dying in America unless Democrats can draw congressional districts based on race, count illegal aliens in the census, and end requirements to show an ID to vote.

Today’s Supreme Court decision effectively guts a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act, freeing state legislatures to gerrymander legislative districts to systematically dilute and weaken the voting power of racial minorities - so long as they do it under the guise of “partisanship” rather than explicit “racial bias.” And it serves as just one more example of how a majority of the current Court seems intent on abandoning its vital role in ensuring equal participation in our democracy and protecting the rights of minority groups against majority overreach. The good news is that such setbacks can be overcome. But that will only happen if citizens across the country who cherish our democratic ideals continue to mobilize and vote in record numbers - not just in the upcoming midterms or in high profile races, but in every election and every level.
