Prison abolition for everyone except the people who talk loudly during the quiet bits at gigs and sport commentators who say “laxadaisical.”

For decades we’ve told men that traditional expectations for women like nurturing, supportive, and family-first, are outdated, sexist, and even harmful. We’ve shamed them out of voicing those desires. Yet somehow, the reverse conversation never happens. Women’s expectations for men? Those remain stubbornly traditional, and almost no one in the mainstream calls it out. A weekend read from me over on S: open.substack.com/pub/lisabritto…

@TheTinMenBlog Judging by likes and comments supporting the ‘by other men’ arguments, it’s depressing to see the extent to which large numbers of women now dehumanise men and male victims.

This cartoon, childlike view of the world is prevalent on the left, and is typically the first word they yell when listening to men's issues (usually alongside expletives). Ironically, it’s the same flavor of bigotry that racists use, to derail and wave away conversation of gang violence with “black on black crime”. And I am bored of it. Aren’t you? What do you think?

So often when you post about violent assaults, gang or knife crimes, homicide, criminal exploitation, sexual abuse in prison, or war deaths; where men are the overwhelming victims, a shrill voice quickly arrives at the scene to immediately derail the conversation. “BY OTHER MEN!” It’s a voice that seems to think if a crime is committed by a man, against another man, then both things cancel each other out, and therefore it doesn’t matter. A few days ago I tweeted a video of a young Ukrainian man being dragged from his home, getting stuffed into a van, and taken to the front line of the war. Such a video was a heartbreaking affront to personal liberty and freedom, that I thought might draw emotions of shock and sympathy, perhaps even outrage and protest…. but no…. In response, it was, as it always is, the same symphony of stupidity that serenades so many of these conversations. “WHOS DOING IT!” “WHO STARTED THE WAR!” “WHO WROTE THE RULES!” “WHO BUILT THE SYSTEM?” And so on, and so forth.

@LeStrangeJM172 @AlpacaAurelius Fair enough. But i’d also say women have been telling men for ages that they are just as capable to keep up or match them physiologically, so we cant really blame men for not wanting to treat women differently in this regard, lest they be accused of sexism!

@AlpacaAurelius Agree and this is great! The BUT is that many men don't realize this about women and expect them to keep up in many ways. Everyone needs to understand this 🙏🏽

Ladies, stop treating your body like a man's. You tolerate cold less well than he does. You dont do as well with fasting. You need more sleep. Carbs are critical for your hormones. You have a 28 day cycle unlike his 24 hour cycle. Your body is geared to safety, whereas his is geared to challenge.

@nataliaflowersa @libriscent Dating for personality and character is nothing new for women, and it’s kind of insulting to say they never considered this previously (i’m not saying you are doing this btw).

@TheTinMenBlog It’s a hard cope - erase the legitimacy of male victims of violence, protect the narrative. It's also self-defeating - recognising male victims is essential to tackling the issue of male violence (including against women), with victimisation being a huge driver of being violent.

"WHO STARTED THE WAR!?" This is what it's all about, isn’t it? Who cares if some innocent man is dragged from his home, and never seen by his family again. Who cares if another man is brutally killed, assaulted, stabbed, shot, or raped. Who cares if hundreds of thousands of conscripted men are sent to die, in the most brutal way imaginable. All these social media brats care about, is pointing out the sex of 'WhO StArTeD tHe WaR', in some some sick point-scoring match. They have become so used to seeing men as some kind of faceless tyrannical oppressor class, that they all merge into one monolithic blob called "men", deprived of individuality. In such a warped view, the Ukrainian man is abducting himself. The boy murdered on the street stabbed himself. The man sexually assaulted in prison, raped himself. This idiotic world view is extraordinarily damaging, and yes, it all leads back to the concept of "the patriarchy". Look – If highlighting the genitals of the person committing an act of violence is more important than sympathising with the victims of such violence, then you’re a shitty person. Pointing out such a thing gives no solace to the male victim, it doesn't make the crime hurt less, or not matter. Asking what sex the assailant is, as a means of minimising their target, is no different to asking what a woman was wearing, to minimise sexual harassment against her. It's victim blaming. Except a man cannot go home and change his sex. I'm tired of this "by other men" stupidity. Did you know FGM is mostly "by other women"? Did you know lesbian relationships, which often see the highest rates of violence, is "by other women"? Did you know that most misogynistic tweets are "by other women"? No. Because highlighting such a thing is no better. To me, it's not shitty people that I worry about most. It's shitty people who are drunk on their own sense of perceived moral superiority, who are light-years away from realising they are absolutely part of the problem too. Get a grip. Grow up.

@KaylaKatin @TheTinMenBlog When men self-organise to support each other, it’s often accused of being non-inclusive to women (see Men’s Sheds), or nefarious (see university women’s groups resisting men’s support networks being set up). Even some manosphere content supports male vulnerability.

New from @LisaBritton: "We tell young men to “step up” while simultaneously demanding they “step aside” so women can shine. We urge them to “open up” about their emotions, only to shame them the moment those emotions don’t align with progressive rhetoric. Boys learn early that their drive, their competitiveness, their desire to build and conquer is suspect and something to be shamed away rather than celebrated."

@SwipeWright As someone open to many arguments, I would question why the gender binary is intrinsically a product of male institutions. A society could be patriarchal, but that does not mean that the social norm of a gender-binary is determined solely by men. Gender schema can be the

This new doctoral thesis claims to explain how “gender non-binary assigned female at birth (AFAB) individuals” resist and navigate the “male hegemonic gender binary.” The abstract is loaded with activist jargon: it is “guided by feminist queer theory,” seeks to describe how AFAB non-binary people pursue “liberation from gendered expectations,” and frames ordinary social reality as “cisnormative social systems.” It interviews just 18 people as the basis for their “grounded theoretical model” about how they “resist, reinterpret, and strategically navigate gendered power structures.” Despite the technical language about using “open, axial, and selective coding” and “constant comparative analysis,” this is yet another dissertation where a small number of ideologically sympathetic interviews are filtered through feminist-queer theory and presented as deep insight. It ends by claiming the data has “implications for clinicians,” but I somehow doubt that our healthcare system would benefit from incorporating these findings.

@Patrick02638785 @TheTinMenBlog This is true, but increasingly there is a link drawn between IPV/domestic abuse and the high suicide rate in men (who we know lack access to support services). If we had good causal data on that, then more male deaths could be attributed to female perpetrated abuse.

@TheTinMenBlog Well their argument essentially boiled down to "statistics show that more women are killed by their masculine partners (men) then the other way around".

Unpopular truth: It's true. Women are more often injured by intimate partner violence, but this only seems to happen within unilateral violence. When both partners are violent, overall injury rates skyrocket, increasing by around 5x (!), with men and women similarly likely to be injured. Ironically, it seems bilaterality is a more important factor for predicting severity and injury than perpetrator sex, and yet we ignore it entirely because it is politically inconvenient. Those who deny the full shape and scale of bilateral violence, are quite literally putting their political beliefs ahead of women's safety... which is the very thing they claim to fight for. ~ Source psycnet.apa.org/record/2014-00…

When will more women start taking some accountability for the current fractured state of the relationship between men and women in society today? The lack of group-reflection is very frustrating, and just blaming and shaming men is making everything worse!

@jeffmil05137595 @globeandmail I’ve often thought this. It’s a huge difference hiding in plain sight. Anti-male bias, both explicit and subtle, is so acceptable it’s mainstream. Whereas the misogynistic elements of the manosphere exist only there, and everyone is shining a light on them and calling it out.

@ChrisWillx Women have a negative view of men because of them popularizing the manosphere. You cant demand women lose the right to vote and be bullied out of the workforce and expect them to view you fondly. You reap what you sow.

Women feel much more negatively towards young men than young men feel about them. 72% of men have a positive view of women. 50% of women have a neutral or negative view of men. 21% of women have an actively negative view of men. Only 7% of men feel the same. For all the talk about manosphere-inspired misogyny, 3x more women hold a negative view of men than men hold of women. — h/t @NewStatesman

@carlaskaufel @ChrisWillx @CostelloWilliam I think it’s more that mainstream media/politicians/ commentators point to the most extreme versions of the manosphere and say ‘look what men are like’. If they focused more on positive/benign aspects women would have a less negatively skewed take on men. But that doesn't sell.
