@Corbienest Although I enjoyed reading Coupland’s “Generation X” the summer after my senior college year, I regret that I internalized its fatalism, leading to lowered ambition & drive that took a bit to overcome. The cynicism I adopted became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The reason Gen X is so cynical is they were the first generation that was taught, “You can be anything you want when you grow up.”
They genuinely believed it and became bitter when it turned out not to be true.
They are not the celebrities they were told they could be.

One of the puzzles I find myself mulling over -- too often -- is the question of why artistic genius springs up in geographic clusters rather than in some broad, roughly predictable way. So many great musical talents from Seattle all at once? Whatever may be behind this phenomenon, it doesn't seem to operate with AIs, whose outputs don't arrive in this irregular, qualitatively "lumpy" fashion.

@ajlamesa True. The worst is when the dumpsters get picked up and it sounds like they’re bowling with all the glass bottles, and getting lots of strikes.

god damn manhattan steals your sleep in ways you don’t fully appreciate until you’re somewhere quiet. the noise is actually physiologically adversarial. the damn ambulance sirens are engineered to bypass habituation & your nervous system can’t ignore them because it’s not supposed to. instead i have been waking up to birds lately & it’s the exact inverse. the dawn chorus acts like an evolutionary safety signal. your brain reads it as “all clear.” you rise instead of jolt. the city that never sleeps is actually a huge warning sign.

This is a good way to look at it. And if groceries weren’t twice as expensive as everywhere else and everything didn’t smell like urine and marijuana, and I wasn’t being charged taxes higher than my current mortgage-minus-principal payment, I might want to make that tradeoff.
Amazon and streaming and the foodie boom have taken away so much of the comparative advantage of New York. There’s just nothing I can get in NYC that I can’t get in Houston, except blizzards.

People who are gasping at this are missing out on the greatest feature of this apartment. There’s a tenant communal area that’s the main feature. It’s called New York City and it’s amazing. You can meet new people every single day, great food (some of it free), art installations, theater, literature, networking, jobs, walk everywhere, and the entire place is like a free gym. There’s a new commie landlord who may become a problem but we’ve survived worse.

@live_free_603 It’s a nice restaurant in a cool late-1800s grand hotel lobby. Can’t believe how close that place was to permanent closure decades ago; it’s a gem of the area. Every time I go I make sure to get the lobster bisque.

E-bikes have no licenses, no license plates, no registration, no insurance. The argument that they are now being treated the same as cars is bullshit. They are all ghost vehicles, at the end of the day 95% of their crashes are hit and runs, and only the victim pays the price.
