Burkina Fasoโs military leader, Ibrahim Traore, has stated that the country should โforget about democracy,โ signaling that military rule may persist for years. He took power in a September 2022 coup, overthrowing another junta that had come to power just nine months earlier. Since then, he has consolidated control, cracking down on opposition and banning political parties in January. Although he initially promised a return to civilian leadership, elections were later postponed, citing insecurity from ongoing Islamist insurgencies. Last year, the junta extended the transition period, allowing Traore to remain in office until 2029. His latest remarks indicate the country is moving further away from its earlier commitment to restore democratic governance.
