@Faust_III @mer__edith Threatening harm against those with whom you don't agree is not how the rule of law or liberal democracies function. On your argument anyone who disagreed with the government would have an excuse for violence. Repeating the word 'peaceful' doesn't make it accurate.

Students have long waited for a responsible response from the U.S. Biden government, from their home state's government, to alleged genocide by the right-wing extremist Netanyahu regime. Then they have marked the end of their patience: peacefully, without weapons.

"Peaceful" ≠ "lawful." "Forcing the cancellation of classes, trespassing, shutting down campuses" are all PEACEFUL. Biden's willful conflation of peaceful w/ lawful is underwriting stunning brutality, & forging political weapons that will be wielded by others at our peril.

Yet the sit-ins might at least have helped to reinvigorate the discussion about how to efficiently stop the serial breach of international legal norms in the Middle East & on Ukrainian territory. It is encouraging to see students showing their concern for that.

@Faust_III @JdA_IntLaw I was Prof. McCorquodale's research assistant and I'm familiar with the concept. But the 'rule of law' still needs an underlying law as a reference point. I'm still not sure which one is best served by university sit-ins.

This is all getting away from the original point that Israel was accused of using AI to target civilians when there is no evidence of that happening.

But you are missing the point: sadly civilians are killed in war. Israel aims to prevent civilian casualties. Hamas aims to increase them.

Even an atrocity crime doesn’t warrant breaching the genocide convention (and murdering 22,000 civilians inc 7000 plus children)

@agstrait I'm very sorry to hear your friend has been affected, but Israel's actions are not 'collective punishment'. It is acting in legitimate self defence. Hamas is committing a double war crime: murdering Israeli civilians, then hiding behind Palestinian (and captive Israeli) ones.

We have a friend in Gaza with a newborn. She's not a Nazi, a terrorist, or a human shield for Hamas. She's a mother, an aid worker, and like millions of others, an innocent civilian. Atrocities do not justify further atrocities. Collective punishment of civilians is a war crime.
