@SmutTerry The Father Brown stories by G.K. Chesterton. Basically, what if Sherlock Holmes was a humble quirky priest with a reformed criminal for a best friend. I see you said Holmes is a bit old-timey for what you're looking for, but I still recommend it for the plot twists.

@sirbenjaminjr The fun way: look up specific things on Pinterest, read a book, listen to a song I know is inspiring.
The awful but unfortunately more productive way: Sitting down and writing whatever comes to mind until I reach flow state.
