Sonic 2 isn't just the best of the trilogy. It's the best Sonic game ever made.
Sonic 1 was the proof of concept. Sonic 3 was great in its own right. But Sonic 2 caught the exact moment where speed, level design, and momentum all clicked at once.
They got it exactly right once, and it was Sonic 2.

It’ll never not astound me how Japan is responsible for “umami” which everyone across the world associates with subtle flavors, while at the same time Japanese people slather mayonnaise on everything.
