@GSJennsen This may be the best sci-fi series I have ever read. Usually I know exactly what to expect. Here, even after 23 books, the characters grow and develop naturally, the plot is unexpected, and I stay up late reading. I can't wait for the last 2! I'll also be sad.

No Lies Detected.๐Ÿ˜Ž "Starshine, by GS Jennsen -- The end of the world began with a library query. In the far future, a talented but irritating heroine with a sweet starship battles aliens, corruption, and the fallout from her impulsive decisions. The first in a 24-book series."
RPLewis@MrRPLewis

Last April I purchased around 320 books. I've been slowly working my way through them. Here are some of my favorites. โ€ข The Third Test by @AlysssaHazel -- If perfection is possible, this is it. A bit of sci-fi, a bit of mystery and suspense, with some in-universe religion thrown in. โ€ข The Second Initiative, by @AlysssaHazel -- The Sequel to The Third Test, and another masterpiece. โ€ข Asterius, by @Chronodendron -- Greek Mythology done right. An absolute master class in authentic dialogue and inner thoughts. โ€ข To Trick a Trickster, by @Chronodendron -- Greek and Norse mythology that was so good I was startled when it ended. โ€ข Sledge vs The Labyrinth, by @SledgevsBooks -- Dude with a sledge vs everyone. I'd watch a thousand movies about this dude. โ€ข Bad Dog, by @AshleyRPollard -- The US vs China, with mechs. I devoured this series. โ€ข The Hand of God, by @YuvalKordov -- More mechs. Ethereal, and a darn good read. โ€ข After Moses, by @MichaelFKane -- Possibly better than Firefly. โ€ข Starshine, by @GSJennsen -- The end of the world began with a library query. In the far future, a talented but irritating heroine with a sweet starship battles aliens, corruption, and the fallout from her impulsive decisions. The first in a 24-book series. โ€ข Dakiti, by @EJFisch -- A bit of Bourne, a bit of Bond, and a bit of Columbo in a well-crafted science fiction setting. โ€ข Dark Bloom, by @Molly_Macabre_ -- The Walking Dead wishes it was this compelling.

In looking at the transcript of the Birthright Citizenship case oral argument, I noted something that I think is indicative of why Justice Jackson seems to be "wearing out her welcome" with other Justices. The CJ has brought a bit of structure to oral arguments -- at least to the beginning. The Attorney takes 60-120 seconds to give a "30,000 foot" overview of his client's position. The CJ then starts the questioning with Justice Thomas, and then goes in order of tenure on the Court. Twice in the Birthright Citizenship case Justice Jackson jumped in ahead of her turn, and stepped on the answers to questions that were posed by Justices on the Court longer than she has been. She first did it at page 23 of the transcript, while Gorsuch was in the middle of asking a question. He ignored her and kept asking his question. She then did it to Justice Barrett -- trying to jump in after Justice Gorsuch finished, when Justice Barrett was next. Justice Kavanaugh opted to not ask any questions in the first round. In fact, she did it twice to Barrett -- coming back and trying to interject a question again when Barrett was still asking questions during the first round. When she did it a 3rd time, Barrett just let her go. Her inability to control herself, and her seeming indifference to the protocol the others all respect are the kinds of little things that end up with you occupying the William O. Douglas seat on the Court.

Terrible decision. Terrible. โ€œWell, you can *have* a gun, you just canโ€™t *buy* a gun.โ€ There is no limiting principle to this. *Any* infringement will stand as long as itโ€™s framed as not *directly* impacting keeping or bearing. How about a law that says you canโ€™t carry a loaded weapon? You can still bear a weapon, just not loaded. Not covered by the 2A, says the 1st circuit. And how long of a waiting period isnโ€™t abusive? Iโ€™ve got $100 some 1st circuit state passes a 10-day law. This decision needs cert immediately.

๐ŸšจUPDATE๐Ÿšจ The First Circuit just set the Second Amendment back decades in Beckwith v. Frey. In a shocking move, they claimed that "purchasing or acquiring" a firearm isn't actually covered by the "plain text" of the 2nd Amendment. This BEGS for Supreme Court review.

I want to express my deep gratitude for all of the brave servicemembers involved in rescuing two F-15E crew members in Iran. These operations are incredibly difficult, and the safe return of both crew members is a powerful testament to their training and the expertise of all the U.S. military units involved in this search and recovery. Grateful today and every day for our heroic men and women in uniform.

Way to go Oregon!
Conservative in Oregon@oregonducksmama

โ€ผ๏ธAnother long term business is closing in Portland Oregon. This is what Hookset Automotive wrote about itโ€ฆ THE GATES ARE CLOSED. THE DEAL IS DEAD. Twenty years of loyalty. Twenty years of sacrifice. In 2002, we fell in love with Portlandโ€™s heart. We built Hookset Automotive with grease, sweat, and a belief in this community. I traded my dream of being an architect for an oil rag to build an honest business with my husband, JC. We did everything right. Portland did everything wrong. I didnโ€™t just run a shop; I served. I led the Parkrose Business Association. I hosted town halls. I stood before the City Council and begged for the law to be enforced. I was trying to save Portland from becoming the next Detroit. I fought for this district until there was nothing left to give. In return, the city turned on us. โ€ขFinancial Extortion: The city didn't just lie; they taxed the shit out of us while doing so. They drained our resources with skyrocketing taxes while providing zero protection in return. โ€ขBetrayal: Mingus Mapps, who once ran Historic Parkrose, used our neighborhood as a political stepping stone to the City Council. He ignored our pleas while drawing a salary meant to protect our streets. โ€ขSlander: When I spoke up about the crime and the "Slough Town" gunfire, neighborhood groups responded with a smear campaignโ€”spreading vile lies about my marriage to silence a woman asking hard questions. โ€ขSabotage: Last week, our landlord illegally chained the gates shut while we were inside. We were held against our will. When we called 911, the policeโ€”the same officers I defended for two decadesโ€”looked at us through the fence and called it a "civil issue." They went out of their way to make sure we didn't get help, even contacting the fire department to tell them not to interfere. Your promise of protection was a lie. We gave this city our lives, and it gave us a lock and a cold shoulder. We are closing our doors because the basic rules of a civilized society don't apply here anymore. The deal we made with this cityโ€”that if you work hard, pay your taxes, and follow the law, youโ€™ll be protectedโ€”was a total lie. To our loyal customers: You were our family. We are devastated it ended this way, but we couldnโ€™t have tried harder. We poured every ounce of our souls into this place, only to be abandoned by the city we tried to save. Portland, you didnโ€™t just fail usโ€”you threw us away. Keep your "weird." Weโ€™re taking our integrity somewhere that actually values it. The gates are closed for good. @GunFoundation Notice that none of the experts said that ANY of Maines suicides occurred within 3 days of a gun purchase. They are using generalized "studies" but cannot point to any actual suicides that would be prevented by this law. The court just accepted the general conclusion.
