On this day, 22 years ago, April 14, 2004, 22-year-old Corporal Jason L. Dunham was serving with Company K, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines in Karabilah, Iraq. His squad was conducting a reconnaissance mission in the town. They heard the sounds of rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire erupting less than two kilometers away. Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Lopez's convoy was under ambush. Corporal Dunham immediately ordered his squad toward the sound of the guns to provide fire support. They drove toward the engagement in their Humvees. The squad suddenly received enemy fire and was forced to dismount and proceed on foot. Corporal Dunham led his Marines through the streets. They approached an intersection and spotted a line of seven Iraqi vehicles trying to depart the area. He ordered his squad to block the convoy and search the vehicles for weapons. Corporal Dunham approached a white Toyota Land Cruiser to inspect it. An insurgent suddenly leaped from the vehicle and grabbed Corporal Dunham by the throat. The two men engaged in brutal hand-to-hand combat. They wrestled to the ground in the dirt. During the struggle, Corporal Dunham noticed the insurgent pull the pin on a Mills 36M hand grenade. The insurgent dropped the live explosive next to them. Corporal Dunham yelled a warning to his fellow Marines. Two other Marines, Lance Corporal William Hampton and Private First Class Kelly Miller, were rushing to his aid. They were fully exposed to the lethal blast radius. Corporal Dunham recognized the immediate threat to his squad. He made a deliberate tactical choice to neutralize the explosive. He removed his Kevlar helmet and threw it over the live grenade. He then threw his own body on top of the helmet. The grenade detonated underneath him. The Kevlar helmet and Corporal Dunham's body absorbed the brunt of the explosion. The blast severely wounded him. His actions completely shielded Lance Corporal Hampton and Private First Class Miller from the lethal shrapnel. Corporal Dunham was medically evacuated from the battlefield. He survived for eight days before succumbing to his head wounds on April 22, 2004.
