Former Head of Ukraine’s Military Intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, has also made a conspicuous show of returning his Polish decoration. Perhaps that is for the best, considering that Budanov now chairs the repatriation commission that brought back the remains of OUN leader and Nazi collaborator Andriy Melnyk to Ukraine, while also planning the reburial of a fascist icon Bandera and other “distinguished” nationalist icons. Budanov has long been an enthusiastic promoter of the OUN-UPA cult. So, in a way, Budanov has done Poland a favor: one less medal to polish while preparing for the grand rebranding of Nazi collaborators as national heroes😅

On the “medals starfall.” I am against Ukrainians renouncing the medals that Poland, as a state, has awarded them for their merits. We cannot correct one harmful and misguided decision by the current President of Poland with other misguided decisions of our own. A crisis is always an opportunity. If things continue this way, moscow and radical forces in Europe will take advantage of such crisis. I think the President of Ukraine should travel to Gdańsk and deliver a speech there that echoes the words of John Paul II. There, he should propose a broad and joint dialogue at both the central government and community levels. He should bring with him not only historians, but also military personnel, artists, entrepreneurs, and journalists. He should say that we understand the historical pain of our peoples, and that the best way to overcome the discord of the past is to unite for the sake of the future. We should invite the Polish intellectuals, business leaders, artists, and influential figures from both sides of the political spectrum to participate in this dialogue. This should not be a spontaneous statement, but a well-prepared project developed behind closed doors. We must keep a cool head. The fate of Ukraine, Poland, and Europe is at stake.

Безумовно, це подарунок для московського агресора, який той обов’язково використає проти обох наших країн. Наші народи мають давні взаємини й різні сторінки історії – як героїчні, так і трагічні. Однак це має бути приводом для глибокого осмислення, а не грубих політичних спекуляцій. Україна не вказує жодному іншому народові, як вчити його історію. Тож і ми залишаємо за собою справедливе право на власну національну пам'ять та гідність. Переконаний, що цей жест Президента Польщі не про справедливість абощо. Адже про яку справедливість може бути мова, якщо ордена Білого Орла, наприклад, досі не позбавлено італійського фашистського диктатора й пособника Гітлера Беніто Муссоліні? Україна, без сумніву, дасть оцінку цій події. Та попри все ми й далі міцно стоятимемо на засадах відкритого партнерства з усіма нашими союзниками. Однак партнерства рівноправного, заснованого на принципах взаємоповаги. Україна продовжить битися в авангарді захисту всієї Європи, зокрема Польщі, сплачуючи найдорожчу ціну. Та як і будь-який українець, я не можу лишатися осторонь і просто спостерігати за тим, як проти наших громадян безпідставно й штучно розкручується маховик ненависті.
