@delmoi @NathanJRobinson It really has nothing to do with wealth or power. It’s a matter of character and principal—which can’t be bought or sold. He could be lying, but it’s nearly impossible to feign genuity.

@aechlin @lionel_trolling I mean nobody should get a veto but I think the bigger issue is that there are many communities with no subway that desperately want it, so that seems more pressing than fighting to tunnel under a neighborhood that probably won’t use it and doesn’t want it

This is because I said it wasn't that big of a deal to transfer in the city since the trip took about 30 minutes, which is how long it takes to go anywhere in New York, but I guess that's offensive if you're a transplant loser who thinks that Brooklyn is the center of the world
Liam@itsliamegan

John Ganz makes a lot more sense when you understand him as being essentially like Matt Yglesias, sort of a high-concept satire of a particular kind of bourgeois idiocy

@BKleinbaum @lionel_trolling Fair. I haven’t lived there for like 10 years so should probably stay mum. Still, both the G and the proposed purple line don’t connect—at least as the crow flies and dive bars not withstanding—a logical transit corridor.

@aechlin @lionel_trolling The Hasidic community has nothing to do with why the subways are designed this way. The subways were designed to get people to Manhattan where the jobs were. It’s now too expensive to build new subway lines, sadly.

@lionel_trolling Obviously it’s not a social justice issue. But is the Hasidic neighborhood within their rights to basically keep public transit out to disenfranchise an underreported number of people? 2nd Ave “opened up” the UES. Why not Williamsburg?

@uncledoomer You can tell just by looking at the graph that Cash for Clunkers is not the main driver. The program destroyed about 680,000 cars, but total used car sales in the US are 20M+ each year. Also, the avg. scrapped car was built in 1997. Those would've been 25+ year old beaters now.

@BedoyaUSA I don’t understand where the UAW is politically. If they continue to be conservative and expect hideous carve outs for their members, then f* them.

@TrueSlazac @jmhorp American bread has to be ‘complimented’ with something unhealthy like butter or jam because bread is like meat—eat it fresh, or beware. If the bread tastes good ‘sans accoutrements’ then you’re safe, basically.

@bikelakecity @MikeLMower For example: “look at all this great success that investments in a bike-friendly city have had (data to follow…) yet politicians are unwilling to acknowledge them for XYZ”

@bikelakecity @MikeLMower As politicians do. Nothing new there. My point, if there is one, is that right now positive messaging from progressives is working really well. You’ve clearly git passion and drive, I’m just wondering if there’s a different way to position it.

@bikelakecity @MikeLMower I’m hearing negativity rather than proposals or analysis. Why the ban? Where specifically could we do better and how do propose we get there? I’m all for Parisian streets my man.

@aechlin @MikeLMower Of course those are positive developments. But the state reacted to them by actively BANNING the construction of more bike and bus facilities. I'm not sure where we're miscommunicating but I have no idea what argument you're trying to make.

@bikelakecity @MikeLMower I have no idea what would come after—what’s your proposal? From where I sit I’ve seen a lot of great investment in bike and pedestrian-friendly pathways in SLC. Isn’t that a positive development?

That robotics are predominantly humanoid (or caninoid?) is uninspired. Birds of prey in particular seem like a far more difficult and consequential emulation.

Reminder that 54% of British people believe a dog license should be required to own *any* breed of dog. The British nanny state exists because the British people are just that way. It mostly reflects what they want, nobody forced it on them.

@nicolasfulghum The point being that historically its been cheaper for SA to extract and torch crude oil than to invest in the solar equivalent.

@nicolasfulghum Saudi Arabia burns like 0.5 million b/d of crude oil for power generation annually. So instead of putting that oil through a refinery to make diesel or fuel oil (still extremely dirty), they just torch it to run turbines. Crazy!

Why is the global energy landscape looking increasingly dire for fossil fuels? Almost all the remaining countries where fossil-powered electricity has so far still been rising have excellent solar resources. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, India etc. are ready for solar to take off!
