Govt laying down guidelines for under-5s and screentime but not for books time. Former Schools Minister Nick Gibb wasn't happy about pre-schoolers reading real books. He said they're 'confusing' 'cos children who are learning to read should only read phonics books.

@PaulGarvey4 As a teacher in mainstream for nearly 18 yrs and SEND INA for severely autistic, and other kids with all sorts if attachment disorders, I saw regularly how hard it was and why teachers and TAs are leaving. It's tragic, but burnout dealing with kids in mainstream is killing us.

@aqualavender Exactly that Bev. Time the foul practice of Zero Tolerance and its inevitable partner, Selection by Compliance was fully outed as the blight that it is. It’s great to see this happening on Twitter, at least!

This is Selection by Compliance. I've named it & defined it in 'Taking Control 3' for the first time in print. It's time we all used this phrase to describe what appalling practice is going on in some schools and trusts. Selection by Compliance is real. news.sky.com/story/pupils-e…

@MartinSLewis When you buy fresh fruit and veg from the supermarket, always take it out of plastic wrapping before storing in the fridge. Supermarkets sell 'washed' fruit and veg knowing that once water is introduced it rots the produce faster. Always dry goods before storing them.

@PieCorbett I recall teaching in year 6. When assessing writing you could see the formulaic nature of childrens' writing. It was such a shame; they'd almost completely lost their creative voices. That applied across every genre of writing.

Primary writing on England is taught round applying grammar rather than composition and effect… children bung in grammar rather than creating an effect. It makes writing dull. A stronger link with reading helps and shared composition. Being writers.

@Eddiemammy101 @cierzo1 Ofsted simply refuse to listen. The unions have to get involved to protect their members. I’m so worried that someone will be feeling so worried, or that they’ve failed their school, that we’ll have another tragedy on our hands. @NAHTnews @ASCL_UK @NEUnion

There’s a lot of people (rightly) commenting on Ofsted & its unfairness, the unpleasant attitudes of some inspectors, the tone deaf response to Ruth’s death etc. I whole heartedly agree. But what are we going to do about it, apart from vent on X? I’m just one person; one of many

@SwailesRuth The language used to make these statements is adversarial from the outset. 'have only recently' implies that nothing was done. Why not say 'have begun to'. Re-wording could dramatically change perceptions and be far more supportive than punitive.

This phrase, which would put a school into the "needs attention" category, is causing huge alarm. In schools where leaders know things aren't quite right, they're reluctant to make any changes because they're "In the window" and unsure how recent a change needs to be to fit!

Ofsted visited 50 schools. Found a gap between decoding accuracy and reading fluency. 25%+ of pupils enter secondary below expected reading standards. Despite having had secure phonics knowledge. This isn't a decoding problem. It's a fluency problem.

@MichaelRosenYes Keep the candle burning, Michael. They have no understanding of what reading is, what it can be, how it can be developed and the sheer joy of sharing images in a beautufully illustrated picture book that may have no words at all! How these 'experts' get the ear of the DFE

@MrsSarahOgden @warwickmansell @tes Retired teacher here...as soon as a newly qualified teacher took over as behavior 'lead', (yes, appalling) the introduction of the behavior charts made behavior worse. Who knew? 🤔

@warwickmansell @tes The anxiety this used to generate was immense. It has reduced with age but stuff like blanket marks because of general class disruption not directly attributed to my child causes real upset. Having had maybe 3 in 3 yrs in total she still asks me to check regularly.

JP: “We have more shame about dogs pooing on the street than children not being potty trained” What do you think? This morning on TTR, the panel discussed new research showing that 1 in 4 children start school without being toilet trained, meaning teachers spend an average of 2.5 hours a day dealing with the impact. @SwailesRuth IMHO, it's generally people who have little or no experience. They comment negatively, not from malice, but from ignorance. If they stepped into a teaching establishment for just one day, they would change their view. They don't envy your stratgies, just your success. Keep going!

It's fascinating to watch people with substantial salaries, a workplace pension, holiday and sick pay etc. complaining about those who don't have any of these things, accusing them of "grifting" because they sell their services. Of course, they could always try it themselves.
