What if verifying proofs on Bitcoin did not have to be “possible in theory” but painful in practice?
A lot of BitVM-style designs hit the same wall:
low on-chain cost, but massive off-chain overhead.
BABE pushes that wall back hard.
It keeps dispute costs in the BitVM3 range on-chain, while shrinking the off-chain storage and setup burden by orders of magnitude (around 1000x).
If you care about trustless BTC collateral, bridges, or any proof-based construction on Bitcoin, this is one of those foundational primitives you want in your mental model.

Today we release BABE, a new Groth16 proof verification protocol for Bitcoin. It improves the state-of-the-art by three orders of magnitude in setup and storage costs. eprint.iacr.org/2026/065.pdf BABE (BAbylon-BErkeley) is a synthesis of two key ideas: Witness encryption on linear pairing, and Argo MAC, a recently introduced garbling primitive. Witness encryption on linear pairing reduces the complex pairing operations in Groth16 verification to a single scalar multiplication on the BN254 elliptic curve. The single scalar multiplication can further be transformed into a vector homomorphic MAC, which can be efficiently computed by Argo MAC. BABE will be launched as part of Babylon's alpha-testnet for the Trustless Bitcoin Vault in February. NGL, I didn’t sleep a wink the night when a16z decided to back our brand new trustless BTCVault protocol.
It means a lot to Babylon:
- Our tech passed one of the most rigid scrutiny in the industry
- Our vision of trustless Bitcoin productivity aligns with one of the most visionary VC in the world
- As crypto (especially Bitcoin) gets mainstream, a16z’ prestige influence in both web2 and web3 will greatly help trustless BTCVaults get both crypto native and institutional adoption.
I envision a future where Babylon becomes the default gateway for Bitcoin to enter the on-chain world and enjoy all the amazing crypto innovations: DeFi, stablecoin, RWA, etc. A lot of value and utilities will be created and channeled to BABY.
