@nickkokonas Sure but literally no one is talking about the dozen people in the country for whom this hypothetical matches when vilifying the wealthy.

And now an example: A person studies hard, takes on student loan debt, and becomes a doctor -- let's say a dentist or dermatologist. Reliably they are mid-six-figures earners in big cities. They are doing well! But our example is entrepreneurial as well !! /1

@AndToddsaid We rarely went out to eat. Our parents made us go outside and entertain ourselves for hours. I’m not blaming people today for it, but technology has led a level of entitlement here that is really dysfunctional. 2/2

@AndToddsaid This is pure entitlement. I think the ease of life today (internet, cell phones, etc) has raised expectations to a degree that we would have found crazy even 30-40 yrs ago. I mean, we had like 3 TV channels on my mom’s farm. 1/

I suppose I'll be accused of being a leftist for saying this, but working professionals shouldn’t have to brown‑bag it to succeed in a modern society. I don't mean that in the “everyone deserves a pony” sense. I mean it in the “my car doesn’t sound right” sense.

@nashvegas__ At this point, much of human running performance improvements is largely due to technology and (some due to) performance enhancing drugs.

@johnarnold It says that those experiencing mechanical catching have a more predictable result, which was she case for mine. Perhaps the surgery is just recommended for a wider range of ppl with knee pain than is optimal.

Many years ago I hurt my knee playing sports. I was referred to the orthopedist for one of the local pro teams. After keeping me waiting for 2.5 hours, he diagnosed a cartilage tear and recommended surgery. I was so mad at his manner and tardiness I left without scheduling. The next week I got a second opinion from a much younger doc who was likely more current on the recent medical literature. He looked at the same MRI. He said he could do surgery now but his advice was to wait 30 days and see if it healed on its own. It did. Medical reversal is when a practice that became widely used is later shown to be ineffective or even harmful. Examples like meniscus surgery show the need to keep gathering evidence. A not immaterial part of the practice of modern medicine doesn't improve health, and may be net harmful.

@kurt13warner Lots of random options on what worked for others. 1) See a doc to rule out arthritis, meniscus injury, etc. 2) Get evaluated for strength/mobility. Anyone that guarantees they can fix you is dishonest.

@ATabarrok @SuperRareKeegan No, paid claims are an expense. It’s like saying McDonald’s makes money paying for hamburger meat.

@SuperRareKeegan McDonald's makes money by selling hamburgers. Health insurance companies make money by selling claims paid out. We need competition, good info etc. But it would be wrong to begin an analysis of McDonald's by arguing that they make money by making their burgers smaller.

My neighbor is a marketing master. When she opened a “custom stationery store that also showcases local art” in a high rent area (with a big opening party with free food& drinks that I attended), I assumed it was a money losing hobby job for a bored wife. I was wrong

@1m_chart @natolisnuggets @danielcberk There’s a world of difference between 2:30 and 2:45. There’s also a big difference between training at 6:15/mi and actually running a 2:45.

@Malinformed__ @TonySeruga I’m curious. In what way could a cop could “start the problem” that would then justify the guy chasing him around with a knife?

I oppose many many police shootings. Without knowing how this event was instigated, cops have no obligation to allow themselves to be stabbed. If the cop started the violence. It's a bad shoot. If he didn't, it is a good shoot. But cops very often (if not most cases) start the problem.

Mocking armchair critics who have probably never touched a gun, let alone faced a crazed demon, asking “Why not tase him / shoot him in the leg / talk to him?” or some similar nonsense. FACT: He was tased and shot multiple times.

More than 40% of deals we worked on last year had fake EBITDA. Not "messy books." Fake numbers designed to make you overpay. Nearly half. Most buyers would've closed without catching it if they skipped a QoE. You're not betting on a stock. You're betting your family's future.
