I condemn today’s military escalation in the Middle East. The use of force by the United States & Israel against Iran, and the subsequent retaliation by Iran across the region, undermine international peace & security.   All Member States must respect their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the @UN. The Charter clearly prohibits “the threat of the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.”   I call for an immediate cessation of hostilities & de-escalation. Failing to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians & regional stability. I strongly encourage all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table.   I reiterate that there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes, in full accordance with international law, including the UN Charter. The Charter provides the foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security.

SNBS participated in @UNDESA Voluntary National Review (VNR) Workshop in Rome, Italy (16–18 December 2025), which brought together countries preparing to present VNRs next year. SNBS contributed to the discussions, sharing Somalia’s experience, highlighting contextual realities & engaging in practical exchanges on strengthening national coordination & SDG reporting. The workshop also provided valuable peer learning with countries presenting their 4th & 5th VNRs, as Somalia prepares for its 2nd VNR in 2026. SNBS showcased Somalia’s tangible progress in SDG data availability that increased from 39% in 2022 to 80% in 2025, reflecting strengthened systems, partnerships & expanded use of administrative data. SNBS Launches SDG 7 & Environmental Indicators Reports. SNBS today launched Somalia’s first-ever SDG 7 Affordable & Clean Energy Indicators Report at a high-level event attended by ministries, development & humanitarian partners, UN agencies—a major milestone in strengthening national statistical system & advancing evidence-based policymaking in the energy sector. The report presents the most comprehensive assessment to date of Somalia’s progress on energy access, renewable energy, energy efficiency & clean cooking, revealing measurable gains alongside critical data gaps, particularly as the country prepares for the 2026 Voluntary National Review (VNR). Developed in close collaboration with the Ministry of Energy & Water Resources & National Electricity Authority, & informed by World Bank analytical work, SDG 7 report underscores the importance of reliable & timely data in guiding Somalia’s transition towards affordable, clean & sustainable energy. At the same event, SNBS also launched first-ever Somalia SDG Environmental Indicators Report that advances environmental statistics & mirrors strong, trust-based collaboration with administrative data producers. Covering SDG 6 (Clean Water & Sanitation), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water) & SDG 15 (Life on Land), report assesses Somalia’s current progress, identifies key environmental challenges & opportunities, strengthens national statistical capacity through improved integration & visualization of administrative data, and generates evidence-based insights to inform policy and program interventions. Somalia & France Strengthen Statistical Partnership Somalia National Bureau of Statistics & France’s National Institute of Statistics & Economic Studies (INSEE) have entered into Memorandum of Understanding, in a show of commitment towards advancing official statistics via international cooperation. The MoU establishes structured framework to support Somalia’s National Statistical System, with collaboration spanning statistical governance, methodology, economic & social statistics, data communication & dissemination in line with international standards & best practices. Under the agreement, cooperation will focus on capacity building through expert missions, tailored training, study visits, methodological support & exchange of statistical documentation & best practices. SNBS Deputy DG, Abdirahman Omar Dahir, @abdirahm_omar, represented the Bureau at the signing ceremony, while INSEE was represented by Olivier Biau, Head of Department of Statistical & International Coordination. Today, Somalia proudly marked African Statistics Day 2025, joining other nations in the continent in recognising the power of data to shape peace, justice and prosperity. This year’s theme speaks directly to our national journey. As we rebuild institutions and deepen stability, innovation in data becomes the prerequisite engine that guides our policies, measure our progress and strengthen public trust. Somalia’s statistical transformation is well and truly underway. From modern digital surveys to geospatial mapping, strengthened administrative records and the rapid expansion of SDG reporting—our national data ecosystem is becoming more credible, more inclusive and more aligned with international standards. These gains are possible because of strong collaboration among Federal Government, Federal Member States, Parliament, academia, civil society and development partners, in an enduring partnership that is proving that resilient institutions are built on reliable evidence. As I told participants today, statistics are the very compass of national development. On this African Statistics Day, I reaffirm SNBS’s commitment to excellence, innovation and public service. Somalia today marked African Statistics Day 2025 in a high-level, well-attended national commemoration in Mogadishu, Somalia. The event underpinned the essential role of reliable, timely data in shaping policy, planning and development in Africa. This year’s theme — “Leveraging Innovations in Data and Statistics to Promote a Just, Peaceful, Inclusive and Prosperous Society for Africans” — resonates strongly with Somalia’s ongoing transformation. SNBS continues to modernise data systems, expand digital data collection and strengthen administrative records to support peace, justice, stabilization and national development priorities. The commemoration drew wide participation from Federal Ministries, Members of Parliament, Federal Member States, Office of the Attorney General, other government institutions, World Bank, UN agencies, development and humanitarian partners, academia, media organisations and civil society, with all speakers reaffirming shared commitment to evidence-based governance and decision-making. On the sidelines of the @ContactPARIS21 Fall Meeting 2025 in Paris, SNBS DG, Dr. Abdisalam Mohamed, held a productive bilateral meeting with the team from France’s National Institute of Statistics, @InseeFr. Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation to build a modern, resilient & evidence-driven national statistical system for Somalia. Through this partnership, @InseeFr & SNBS agreed to explore collaboration in key areas — including technical support, exchange visits & institutional capacitation— to advance high-quality, policy-relevant statistics that support Somalia’s economic & social development agenda. Adopting international best practices & producing high-frequency indicators such as the Industrial Production Index & Business Confidence Surveys, SNBS aims to enhance data credibility, attract investment & propel Somalia towards sustainable, data-informed growth. @AbdisalamHumbul @abdirahm_omar

Honoured to represent Somalia at the 2025 All Members Meeting of the Expert Group on Refugee, IDP & Statelessness Statistics (#EGRISS2025AMM) in Warsaw, hosted by @StatPoland. I presented Somalia’s approach to systematically collecting and integrating displacement data into official statistics, including insights from 2023 Survey on Nomadic Movement into IDP Camps. I highlighted how IDP Statistical Sector Plan, as a sub-strategy of NSDS2, and the anticipated Population & Housing Census (2025–2029) will strengthen national population data framework and ensure comprehensive inclusion of displaced populations. Somalia’s growing engagement in global statistical forums accentuates our commitment as a national statistical authority to producing reliable, high-quality statistics that support evidence-based decision-making and policy planning.

Warsaw, Poland; 28–30 Oct 2025 Somalia National Bureau of Statistics joined global statistical community at the 2025 All Members Meeting of Expert Group on Refugee, IDP and Statelessness Statistics (#EGRISS2025AMM), hosted by @StatPoland. Our Director General, Dr. Abdisalam Mohamed, delivered presentation on “Somalia’s Approach to Collecting & Managing Refugee, IDP & Statelessness Data,” underpinning SNBS’s ongoing efforts to transform humanitarian data into official statistics. He showcased Somalia’s pioneering 2023 Survey on Nomadic Movement into IDP Camps, whose findings identified major data gaps & emphasized importance of strengthening national coordination to produce reliable, IRIS-aligned displacement statistics. Dr. Abdisalam also participated in a panel discussion on implementing the IRRS, IRIS and IROSS frameworks at the national level, where he shared Somalia’s experience in integrating displacement data through IDP Statistical Sector Plan—one of the key sub-strategies of the National Statistical Development Strategy (NSDS2). He further noted that the upcoming Population & Housing Census will update Somalia’s population baseline & ensure comprehensive inclusion of IDP settlements. His remarks underscored national ownership, data quality & institutional collaboration as critical pillars for advancing the displacement statistics agenda. Somalia’s engagement in #EGRISS2025AMM points to the tangible progress of national institutions like SNBS in strengthening data systems & contributing to global statistical discourse— such that every person counts & is counted.
