SNBS Director-General today launched a two-day Government Consultation on the preparation of Somalia’s second Voluntary National Review (VNR) 2026 for Sustainable Development Goals. The consultation brought together over 50 participants from across the National Statistical System, including Government Statisticians, Monitoring & Evaluation Officers, SDG Focal Points, Administrative Data Experts, representatives from Ministries & Government Agencies. The meeting serves as a key national data validation & review exercise to strengthen the quality, accuracy & completeness of Somalia’s official SDG reporting ahead of the 2026 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF). In his opening remarks, the Director-General underscored the importance of strong administrative data systems, institutional collaboration & evidence-based policymaking in producing a credible & nationally owned VNR report. He noted the significant progress Somalia has made in SDG reporting, with national SDG data coverage increasing from 39% during the 2022 VNR to nearly 70% in 2026 through expanded administrative data systems, surveys & official statistical reporting. Throughout the consultation, participants review sectoral SDG findings, validating administrative & survey data, identify data gaps & inconsistencies & assess whether the report adequately reflects regional disparities, vulnerable populations & the principle of “Leaving No One Behind.” Discussions also focus on strengthening data sharing, coordination & institutional cooperation to improve future SDG monitoring & reporting. SNBS commenced consultation process for Somalia’s Second Voluntary National Review (VNR) 2026 on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) today in Mogadishu, bringing together 70 representatives from prominent Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), including groups working on women and children’s affairs, persons with disabilities, academia, the private sector and the Somali diaspora. The consultation was officially opened by SNBS Deputy Director General, Abdirahman Omar Dahir, who underscored the importance of inclusive national dialogue & evidence-based reporting in assessing Somalia’s progress towards achieving the SDGs. Participants engaged in rich & constructive discussions on current state of SDG implementation in Somalia, sharing practical experiences, key challenges and recommendations to strengthen implementation efforts. This marks Somalia’s second national review of SDGs, reflecting notable progress in strengthening the country’s SDG reporting systems & national data ecosystem. Somalia’s SDG data coverage has increased significantly from 39% during the first VNR in 2022 to nearly 70% in 2026, driven by expanded administrative data systems, surveys, sectoral reporting & stronger collaboration across government institutions & stakeholders. Strengthening Statistical Partnerships between Somalia & Norway 🇸🇴🤝🇳🇴 The delegation from Somalia National Bureau of Statistics is currently in Norway for a strategic engagement hosted by Statistics Norway (SSB), taking place from 20–24 April 2026. During the visit, SNBS team held a high-level meeting with Director General of SSB, Geir Axelsen, engaging in constructive & forward-looking discussions aimed at strengthening institutional collaboration & knowledge exchange between the two national statistical offices. The engagement is a collaborative exercise where SNBS presented notable progress made in Somalia’s statistical system, alongside existing opportunities & lessons. In turn, SSB shared its perspectives & experiences across key areas, including population & business registers, national accounts, administrative data systems & application of modern technologies in official statistics. The overarching objective of this engagement is to jointly identify priority areas for cooperation & support, while fostering a shared understanding that contributes to strengthening Somalia’s statistical capacity for evidence-based planning & sustainable development. I condemn today’s military escalation in the Middle East. The use of force by the United States & Israel against Iran, and the subsequent retaliation by Iran across the region, undermine international peace & security.   All Member States must respect their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the @UN. The Charter clearly prohibits “the threat of the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.”   I call for an immediate cessation of hostilities & de-escalation. Failing to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians & regional stability. I strongly encourage all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table.   I reiterate that there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes, in full accordance with international law, including the UN Charter. The Charter provides the foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security.

SNBS participated in @UNDESA Voluntary National Review (VNR) Workshop in Rome, Italy (16–18 December 2025), which brought together countries preparing to present VNRs next year. SNBS contributed to the discussions, sharing Somalia’s experience, highlighting contextual realities & engaging in practical exchanges on strengthening national coordination & SDG reporting. The workshop also provided valuable peer learning with countries presenting their 4th & 5th VNRs, as Somalia prepares for its 2nd VNR in 2026. SNBS showcased Somalia’s tangible progress in SDG data availability that increased from 39% in 2022 to 80% in 2025, reflecting strengthened systems, partnerships & expanded use of administrative data. Somalia & France Strengthen Statistical Partnership Somalia National Bureau of Statistics & France’s National Institute of Statistics & Economic Studies (INSEE) have entered into Memorandum of Understanding, in a show of commitment towards advancing official statistics via international cooperation. The MoU establishes structured framework to support Somalia’s National Statistical System, with collaboration spanning statistical governance, methodology, economic & social statistics, data communication & dissemination in line with international standards & best practices. Under the agreement, cooperation will focus on capacity building through expert missions, tailored training, study visits, methodological support & exchange of statistical documentation & best practices. SNBS Deputy DG, Abdirahman Omar Dahir, @abdirahm_omar, represented the Bureau at the signing ceremony, while INSEE was represented by Olivier Biau, Head of Department of Statistical & International Coordination. Today, Somalia proudly marked African Statistics Day 2025, joining other nations in the continent in recognising the power of data to shape peace, justice and prosperity. This year’s theme speaks directly to our national journey. As we rebuild institutions and deepen stability, innovation in data becomes the prerequisite engine that guides our policies, measure our progress and strengthen public trust. Somalia’s statistical transformation is well and truly underway. From modern digital surveys to geospatial mapping, strengthened administrative records and the rapid expansion of SDG reporting—our national data ecosystem is becoming more credible, more inclusive and more aligned with international standards. These gains are possible because of strong collaboration among Federal Government, Federal Member States, Parliament, academia, civil society and development partners, in an enduring partnership that is proving that resilient institutions are built on reliable evidence. As I told participants today, statistics are the very compass of national development. On this African Statistics Day, I reaffirm SNBS’s commitment to excellence, innovation and public service. Somalia today marked African Statistics Day 2025 in a high-level, well-attended national commemoration in Mogadishu, Somalia. The event underpinned the essential role of reliable, timely data in shaping policy, planning and development in Africa. This year’s theme — “Leveraging Innovations in Data and Statistics to Promote a Just, Peaceful, Inclusive and Prosperous Society for Africans” — resonates strongly with Somalia’s ongoing transformation. SNBS continues to modernise data systems, expand digital data collection and strengthen administrative records to support peace, justice, stabilization and national development priorities.
