I really think tinkering… turning something inside and out, looking at it from different angles, questioning assuptions… iterating, improving, refinining, is so important for doing great work.

Video games deliver some of the best bang-for-buck / entertainment value. Go out for dinner and easily spend $50+. And it's interactive too, where you get to be the main character, unlike Netflix. Really crazy to think about.

Videos games are especially sensitive to performance engineering because heavy graphics are updated at the per-frame level, and players care a lot about responsiveness. Lag spikes suck.

Performance is hard and undervalued. If folks don't understand how things work under the hood, or don't care to learn, it's hard to optimize at the engine level.

There was a niche subculture around the Coq proof assistant, and pals spent a lot of time proving things like fundamental theorem of calculus using it. Nowadays, this line of thinking sounds pretty forward-thinking😂
