A food delivery rider in Ningbo posted the following video venting, and it says more about China’s economy than any official data ever could.
“Stop saying if you’re unemployed, just deliver food. There are no orders. Except lunch peak, you swipe for hours and get nothing. Deliveries are faster now because hundreds of riders are flying solo, empty-handed. It is 6Pm, the wind cuts like a knife, and my hands are frozen stiff.”
Now compare that to the official narrative.
China’s National Bureau of Statistics says youth unemployment is 16.9% in March 2026. Sounds bad,but still manageable, right? The real story is much darker. These numbers only count urban areas, exclude people over 55, and don’t even include students who are pushed into fake internships or delayed graduation just to keep them off the books.
Even worse, if you work just one hour a month or work as a food delivery rider in this video who can barely survive, you’re no longer considered unemployed.
That’s how the system hides the problem.
And here’s the core issue: China doesn’t optimize for jobs. It optimizes for GDP.
In places like Japan or the U.S., unemployment is political survival. If jobs disappear, governments fall. In China, GDP is the scoreboard. Build another railway, another factory, and the numbers look great, even if people can’t find work.
The result? Impressive headlines. Empty wallets.
That’s how an unemployment crisis turns into an economic death spiral.
And China is already in it.
